COURSES DEVELOPED AND TAUGHT AT OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY:

Professional and Capstone Planning (ENVR 4811). This course is designed to prepare senior Environmental Science students for their capstone project. Communication, team work, and professional development skills are interwoven into the development of a proposal to solve a real-world environmental problem or application.

Environmental Science Applications and Problem Solving (ENVR 4813). A continuation of ENVR 4811 during which students work in teams to develop solutions and communicate recommendations to professionals as part of their senior capstone project.

Freshman Research Scholars (AG 2890). This seminar is offered to CASNR students participating in the Freshman Research Scholars Program. The tools needed for research and the approaches used to present the output of research will be discussed. Resources available to assist researchers within Oklahoma State University will be identified and introduced (e.g. Library, Compliance Office). The essential components of a research proposal will be reviewed, with examples of the approach needed for a successful proposal. Students will prepare their own research proposal in an area of interest to them and prepare a “family dinner table” description of their proposed research.

Introduction to Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM 4990; NREM 1012). Developed a team-taught course targeted at introducing new NREM freshman and transfer students to the natural resources within Oklahoma and the career possibilities for graduates from the program. Primary goals of this course are to promote development of a cohort relationship for incoming students and increasing retention rates of first year NREM students.

Ecology of Natural Resources (NREM 2013). Introductory focus on understanding and applying general ecological principles to agricultural and natural ecosystems. Emphasis on relationships between climate, soils, agricultural, and natural ecosystems. Topics include nutrient cycles, energy flow, species interactions, biological diversity, productivity, sustainability, and landscape and ecosystem management.

Natural Resource Biometrics (NREM 3063). This course deals with the application of statistical methods to natural resource problems such as estimation of forest, habitat and rangeland parameters, and estimation of relationships between natural resource parameters.

Ecological Sites: Concepts and Applications (NREM 4990). Developed a course in collaboration with federal agency personnel to provide students the opportunity to learn the development process and details of ecological site descriptions.

Principles of Range Management (NREM 3613). Developed and currently teach course focused on basic management practices important for sustainable range management. Class is targeted at upper-class students in multiple disciplines within College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (e.g. animal science, wildlife, rangeland management, environmental sciences, agronomy, soil science, and natural resources).

Ecology of Invasive Species (NREM 4033/5033). Developed and currently teach a senior/graduate level course addressing current concerns involving invasive species in the natural resources.

Rangeland Resources Planning (NREM 4613). Developed and currently teach capstone course for senior-level students in rangeland ecology and management, animal science, wildlife, and fire ecology and management.

Research in Rangeland Ecology and Management (NREM 4990). Independent study course designed to teach students the process of developing an original research project focusing on their implementation of the scientific method.

Online AgIdea: Ecology of Invasive Species. Developed and taught an online course targeting remotely located managers within the natural resources field.

Professions in Natural Resources (RLEM 1011; NREM 1011). Team taught course targeting incoming freshman and transfer students to help them develop planning skills for their careers. Guest lectures by professionals within the field of natural resources, resume development, personal goals, and professional development are the focus of the course.

Senior Seminar (RLEM 4571). Designed to provide professional development opportunities for upper-level students. Resumes, cover letters, job searching, and

federal job KSA’s (knowledge, skills, and abilities) were produced/conducted by students.

Special Topics (NREM 4990; RLEM 4990). Student driven course. Develop a list of course goals for individual students. Topics have included: Range Plants, internship, presentations, development of specific professional skills.

Range Management and Restoration (RLEM 3613). Developed and taught a course integrating range management practices and the restoration of damaged rangeland systems. Class was targeted at upper-class students in multiple disciplines within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and Arts and Sciences students in the area of conservation science and wildlife.

Graduate Seminar (RLEM 5020). Designed to formally teach graduate students proper scientific and professional seminar techniques.

Introduction to Plant and Soil Systems (PLNT 1213). Developed and taught service course designed to develop College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources students’ understanding of crop, pasture, and range ecosystems.

Applied Plant Science (PLNT 2013). Developed and taught a sophomore level course targeting plant and soil science students. Students learn and apply practices related to crop, pasture, and range management.

Research in Plant and Soil Sciences (PLNT 4500). Independent study course designed to teach students the process of developing an original research project focusing on their implementation of the scientific method.
