Research Statement: My research focus has mainly involved cardiac critical care and thoracic organ transplantation and has expanded the gamut of single site to multicenter endeavors. Additionally, I have been fortunate to be involved in scientific statement writing for the American Heart Association as well as for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplant. I have mentored fellows and junior faculty being the senior sponsor on several initiatives including American Heart Association Grants. I remain an active author for the Pediatric Heart Transplant Study Group which is comprised of over 50 pediatric heart transplant centers and is a multi-center database that begets research that alters the standard of care in this ever changing field. I have been involved in several multi-center trials in pediatric cardiology with a prominent leadership position on the PRIMACORP (Prophylactic Intravenous Use of Milrinone After Cardiac Surgery Operation in Pediatrics) trial but also have served on Data Safety Monitoring Boards, being Chairman of one. I have also been a grant reviewer for outside agencies and have worked with the FDA and NHLBI on several projects and review committees. Finally, I had participated in being a member of the IRB for 9 years and was the Co-Chair of the Research Resource Committee at my previous institution. My author H-index is 22. I am known nationally and internationally for heart transplant and heart failure care and research in pediatrics. I have served on international and national committees regarding pediatric thoracic organ failure and transplant as well as cardiac critical care medicine. I have served in leadership roles for many of the committees and have been an officer for international organizations. I also have written numerous invited review articles, commentaries, and book chapters over the years. I was the National Co-Principal Investigator, a Steering Committee member, and primary author for the PRIMACORP multi-center trial. This is the largest multicenter trial in pediatric cardiac critical care to date to my knowledge. This is my major contribution to science as this was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial using 3 parallel treatment groups in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Thirty-one centers in North America participated in this study. This trial showed that high dose milrinone was efficacious as compared to low dose and placebo in decreasing the incidence of low cardiac output syndrome postoperatively. This study has been an influence on postoperative care and has been used as a template for practice models across the world. It is a highly cited paper that has continued to be discussed at national and international meetings presently. This paper was mentioned in both “The year in congenital heart disease” and “The year in cardiovascular surgery” for 2004 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology as a study of great impact on our field (references: Graham TP Jr.. The year in congenital heart disease. JACC 43(11):2132-41, 2004 June 2 and Jones RH. The year in cardiovascular surgery. JACC 43(9):1706-14, 2004 May 5). A sub-analysis of the paper also lead to a description of the pharmacodynamics of the drug in different age groups. I plan to continue to participate on the local, national, and international level in multi-center initiatives and be a mentor to junior faculty and learners.

Teaching Statement: My approach to teaching ranges from informal and formal lectures, bedside teaching, and mentorship. My aim is to provide lectures that suit the particular audience and attempt to fit a multitude of learning strategies for participants. Over the years, I have provided a tremendous amount of lectures within all institutions I have been involved, however I also receive invitations for international and national meeting lectureships. Bedside teaching, whether inpatient or outpatient, is vital and an emphasis. I have tremendous experience with graduate medical education as I was the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program Director for 6 years at my previous institution. During my time as director, the program enhanced its national reputation and was able to increase its allotment of fellows per year. The curriculum was also redesigned and developed further with not only rotation specific goal enhancement but also a wide expansion of learning opportunities. Additionally, during my administrative duties at my previous institution and at present, I am an active mentor in research and grant support for learners and junior faculty. I also feel career transitions and development are important and can certainly be an aspect of teaching and mentoring. Finally, I have mentored several residents since arriving to UNC as an advisor to help foster their interest in cardiology as a career. I have been instrumental in guidance as they approach their fellowship applications. Service and Engagement Statement: I am a Pediatric Heart Failure and Heart Transplant specialist and was the Medical Director of these programs at my previous institutions. I am an inaugural invited member of the Cardiovascular Disease in the Young American Heart Association Pediatric Heart Failure Committee and have focused on development of quality improvement and best practices over the last several years. I am engaged on a national level additionally as an American Board of Pediatrics Sub-board of Pediatric Cardiology member through 2023. As Division Chief, I am dedicated to delivering the highest quality of care and provide depth of pediatric cardiology subspecialty services to the children of North Carolina. I have a strong strategic vision for enhancing the national footprint of the Division, clinical growth, contributing and fostering research and quality improvement initiatives, and facilitating faculty career development. I want to foster multidisciplinary collaboration and develop clinical service lines for our patients to allow for comprehensive expert care. I will assure Departmental initiatives are met and in alignment with strategic planning.
