Summary

Professor Erkko Autio is Chair in Technology Venturing at Imperial College Business School and Visiting Professor (part time) at Tilburg University School of Economics and Management. Previously, he was professor at Aalto University; HEC Lausanne; and Visiting Professor at CERN. Outreach Helped launch the Spinno Programme in 1989. The Spinno programme assists the spin-off of technology-based new firms from universities and research institutes in the Helsinki Metropolitan Region. Co-ordinated the Spinno programme at Helsinki University of Technology between 1990 and 1997. By 2003, some 400 – 500 new firms had been created in the programme.

Research

Current research focuses on digitalisation and its impact on entrepreneurial and platform-centric innovation ecosystems; new venture strategies and new venture internationalisation (notably, ‘Lean Internationalisation’); ecosystem value co-creation; and comparative entrepreneurship (notably, the effect of institutional conditions on individual-level entrepreneurial attitudes, activities, and aspirations).

Methodological approaches employed in published research include multi-level modelling in large datasets; single-level regression models (e.g., OLS, SRE, and so on); inductive case research; optimal matching (under submission); systematic reviews and meta-synthesis (under submission); and theoretical work.

Participated in some 50 domestic and international research projects.

Co-founded the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) initiative, a 70-country research initiative dedicated to collecting data on individual-level entrepreneurial attitudes, activities, and aspirations in some 90 countries since 1998 (www.gemconsortium.org). GEM remains arguably the largest ongoing social science research consortium globally.

Co-founded the Global Entrepreneurship and Development Institute GEDI (www.thegedi.org), which specialises in index creation to profile country-level and regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. The main product of GEDI is the Global Entrepreneurship Index GEI, the official benchmark of the Global Entrepreneurship Week.
