Built the STEM Education and Innovation Research Institute (SEIRI) in partnership with Engineering/IUPUI. Built a Science honors program. Built new living learning spaces for Science students: two STEM floors in housing and the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) wing. Maintained and improved high impact practices (e.g. PLTL, JiTT, advising, Honors, D3 student research, resource and mentorship centers, Life-Health Science Internships, learning communities, PREPS, living-learning spaces, first year experiences, capstones, community-based learning, etc.) to improve retention and graduation. Some was part of our NSF-supported STEP initiative partnership with Engineering that produced 10% increases in STEM graduates/year. Established a Science Diversity Council of students/staff/faculty to lead our diversity efforts and programming. Established new search and screen procedures to improve faculty diversity (see publication below). Record levels of research funding (and faculty earned 12 NSF CAREER awards when school had none in past). Record levels of fund-raising for the IU Bicentennial Campaign (ends in 2020). Major gifts have established scholarship programs, funded endowed chairs, and funded an outreach program to elementary and middle schools to bring hands-on experiences to Indiana youth. Launched new web site with a focus on undergraduate student success and recruiting. Recent campus-wide activities and collaborations – selected examples (more in Service section) Enrollment management committee: recruitment, retention, graduation. Created experiential learning program: >500 sophomores and juniors from >40 majors across 12 schools/colleges. Chair, search and screen for enrollment management leader. Led collaboration with Museum Studies (Liberal Arts), Anthropology (Liberal Arts), Herron Art & Design, University Library, and Eng. & Tech. to create exhibit describing the African American community who lived in the IUPUI area. Collaborations with Eng. & Tech. to build two new teaching/research buildings and new living–learning spaces. Co-chair, IUPUI 50 th anniversary planning committee. Chair, search and screen for Founding Dean, School of Education.

Other Teaching Activities – Other Universities Endocrine Society Shortcourse Program 2000 I participated in a visiting teaching program coordinated by the Endocrine Society Minority Affairs Committee (now the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion) as part of a NIH-supported effort at minority serving universities. During March 13-18, 2000, I visited the Department of Biology at California State University, Northridge. I gave 17 hours of lectures on endocrinology to students ranging from non-majors freshmen to M.S. graduate students in a Genetic Counseling Program. In addition, I taught a lab in endocrinology, met with groups of students to discuss careers in science, and gave a lecture on my research. We published a paper in an education journal describing the lab that was developed during this course (Rhodes and Banner. 2001. "Are your cells pregnant?" - relating biology laboratory exercises to everyday life. The American Biology Teacher 63, 514-517). 2001 I returned to California State University, Northridge – March 12-16, 2001. I gave 18 hours of lectures on endocrinology to students ranging from non-majors freshmen to M.S. graduate students.
