Program and Curricular Development

Developed the original writing-intensive version of PHYS 4052, Methods of Experimental

Physics II, 2000 – 2003.

Developed new projects for Methods of Experimental Physics Laboratory (MXP), 2001 –

present. Work between 2001 and 2003 focused on optics, including projects on external cavity

diode lasers, saturated absorption spectroscopy, Kerr rotation, semiconductor spectroscopy,

and optogalvanic spectroscopy. The goal of this effort was to develop apparatus components

25

that could be used for multiple projects designed and built by students. Professor Crowell has

mentored projects in MXP almost every year since 2000.

Developed new laboratories for PHYS 2605, Modern Physics Laboratory (2004, 2005, 2013).

This is the flagship laboratory class taken by all prospective physics majors as sophomores.

Professor Crowell designed, built and wrote manuals for Millikan oil drop experiment, Hall

effect, and experiments on the normal and anomalous Zeeman effect. Professor Crowell took

the lead in converting this class to a writing intensive class (PHYS 3605W) in 2017.

Developed a formal laboratory for Honors Introductory Physics. Before 2007, the honors class

did not have its own laboratory. Instructors either improvised or simply adopted the regular

(non-honors) laboratories. A new set of more challenging laboratories was developed, with

additions by Professor Crowell in subsequent years. Highlights include a precision

measurement of the gravitational constant g accounting for Newtonian drag, a gyroscope lab,

numerical simulations of orbital mechanics using Python, magnetic materials, and construction

of an AM radio. Professsor Crowell developed a new driven-resonance lab in 2017.

Developed a new mathematically enriched version of the first-year honors introductory physics

sequence. These courses are PHYS 1501V (Honors Introduction to Mechanics) and PHYS

1502V (Honors Introduction to Electricity and Magnetism). These courses were designed to

capture and retain the interest of the very best students who matriculate in the College of

Science and Engineering. Lectures and discussion sections were created. The class shares a

laboratory (see previous item) with the regular honors sequence PHYS 1401V and 1402V. This

work was reported on in the invited talk “Honors physics instruction at a large state

university,” presented at the Winter Meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers,

January 6, 2015.

Initiated discussion sections in PHYS 2201, Introductory Thermodynamics and Statistical

Physics, in Fall, 2017.
