4. Area of scientific activity

Immunology: study of excretion / secretion trypanosomatids proteins involved in polyclonal activation of theimmune system responsible for infectivity of the body. Use of KO parasites, recombinant proteins, cDNA andgenes in dendritic cells as models of vaccines. Molecular Biology: Cloning and sequencing of genes encoding enzymes involved in drug targets and virulencefactors. Study of new drugs with anti-Leishmania. Using nanotechnology to increase the release of drugs andthe realization of new vaccine formulations.Diagnosis: Creating new methods of leishmaniasis diagnosis using the tools generated in the laboratory,namelly recombinant proteins.

Current research interests

Throughout the various ongoing projects, the key objective has been to find the components of the parasitethat are responsible for immune response. Molecules involved in parasite virulence factors as well assearching for possible targets of drugs, polyamine derivatives, as well as the identification of molecules of theparasite may be used as a marker of susceptibility or resistance to natural host (man or dog) forleishmaniasis. We have studied various drugs, some promising as already described for the treatment ofleishmaniasis. We are also interested in the use of KO parasites, recombinant proteins and dendritic cells as apromising model for vaccines. The use of nanotechnology in a controlled release of drugs or the use of newvaccine formulations is an area of recent interest.
