SHORT BIO
Stylianos Chatzidakis is currently R&D Staff and Weinberg Distinguished Fellow within
the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
where he contributes to several research projects and provides R&D support to Department
of Energy (DOE) spent fuel management programs. Stylianos received his Ph.D. in Nuclear
Engineering from Purdue University, his M.Sc. in Energy Physics from the Institut National
Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG) in France and his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
(5-year program) from the National Technical University of Athens. Prior to joining
Purdue University, he was a Reactor Safety Analyst at the 5MW Greek Research Nuclear
Reactor where successfully completed several projects, including the thermal-hydraulic and
safety analysis of the reactor. Stylianos is currently leading research in the fields of spent fuel
management, muon tomography, particle transport and, nuclear fuel simulations using
GEANT4 and COBRA-SFS. His research also includes monitoring using advanced statistical
pattern recognition and machine learning methodologies. It is worth noting the development
of a “Muon Event Generator” that has received attention by researchers at CERN,
Brookhaven National Laboratory, Y-12, and, Canadian National Laboratories. Stylianos
has 17 research papers (12 as first author) published in internationally circulated peer-
reviewed journals, 21 conference proceedings, co-authored 5 book chapters, and more than
200 citations (source: Google Scholar). Stylianos is a recipient of the Weinberg
Distinguished Fellowship at ORNL, and the Outstanding Research Award, Purdue’s
highest award. He is also a recipient of the highly competitive Roy G. Post Foundation
Scholarship, the Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship and, the Purdue Ross Fellowship for
graduate research. He has three Best Paper Awards, two Best Poster Awards, and the 1st
place in the 2014 ANS special design competition.
