Experience in Paediatric Haematology

I have over twenty years experience across all aspects of adult and paediatric

haematology, including clinical and laboratory aspects of malignant haematology bone

marrow and peripheral stem cell transplantation, haemophilias and other bleeding

disorders, thrombophilias, haemoglobinopathies, thalassaemias, transfusion medicine

and benign haematological disease. I also cover on call and daily management of

children with solid tumours.

My Principal Clinical and Research Interests are;-

Leukaemia including immune responses and therapies. I previously have developed

successful immune therapy for haemophilia patients with inhibitors.

Sickle Cell Disease I have developed a sickle cell service including neonatal

screening, disease modifying therapies and joint specialised clinics.

Current Research Interests

£248,000 research project studying the status of the Immune System in Children with

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. I am the CI and lead a small group with

immunologist , post doctoral scientist and research assistant. One paper to date and

two in draft. Due to complete project in 2017.

Sickle Cell Disease. The use of disease modifying agents.

The use of Intelligent Computing to develop management systems in sickle cell

disease. This is a joint project where I supervise a PhD student in The Computer

Sciences Department at John Moore’s University.

Iron Deficiency. I am leading on a project to sustainable treat and prevent iron

deficiency in a rural community in Nepal.

I Have been part of the Haemoglobinopathies NHS Clinical Reference Group.

Clinical Trial Experience.

I have worked in Phase I to Phase III trials over 14 years. I am fully GCP trained.

I am Principal Investigator in several clinical trials including UKALL 2011 and Chief

Investigator in two including my own laboratory research programme.

I have worked with the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE)

as an invited member of a National Guidelines Development Group 2011-13

Medico Legal Experience.

I have seven years of experience in Medico-legal expert reports. My reports have been

both for civil and criminal cases. My reports have covered cases of medical negligence

in relation to cases in paediatric haematology.

I have appeared in court in relation to my reports and have experience of cross

examination.

I have received formal training in medio legal report writing and cross examination at

the General Medical Councils Hallam Centre. The Expert Witness Intensive Training

Course in 2012.
