Major Research Interests:
Broad focus: Understanding the underlying mechanisms for racial/ethnic disparities in health and health
care by studying psychosocial and demographic correlates of health-related behaviors (especially treatment
decision making, acceptance of recommended therapies, and adoption of recommended self-care
behaviors) and health outcomes.
Specific dimensions:
Kressin, page 16
Better understanding the psychological characteristics of patients (e.g., attitudes, beliefs,
personality, stress and mental health) and their association with behaviors including self-care and
treatment decision making;
Improving the quality, appropriateness and equity of care, and enhancing health outcomes and
patient satisfaction, measured through the use of patient-based assessments;
Improving health promotion efforts through a better understanding of the psychosocial correlates
of health and preventive health behaviors, and the effects of the latter on mental, physical and oral
health outcomes, with special emphasis on minority health issues.
