5.3 Key relevant / professional experience / job responsibilities / awards

I have devoted more than 32 years of my life serving this university (under various

names) and is now approximately two years away from retirement. Along the way,

I have accumulated tremendous amount of experiences especially as an

academician and a researcher.

A prominent fishery technologist / fishery ecologist, researcher and consultant

in the field related to fisheries and aquatic environment, fishery resource

enhancement projects and efficiency of various fishing gears. Lectures on the

subjects of fishing technology, fishing gear designs and modeling, fish exploitation

techniques, resource enhancement methods, gear selectivity and fishery

management.

Has published more than 170 research, technical and policy related papers

internationally and locally.

Has supervised more than 25 M.Sc. / Ph.D. research projects in the area of

fisheries technology, fisheries ecology and resource enhancement.

Serves as Refereed Journal Paper Reviewers / Referees, Malaysian Science and

Technology Encyclopedia article reviewer panel, and country focal point for fishing

technology/ecology research.

Serves as member in many institutional committee, most notably the KUSTEM’s

curricullum committe that is responsible for the academic programs of KUSTEM.

Very well-versed in developing academic programs in related fields

Has been awarded several Research and Travel Grants and serve as Members /

Fellows of Asian Fisheries Society, Japan International Cooperation Agency

(JICA), Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS), Southeast Asian

Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), Fisheries Training Institute (ILP),

Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) and other International and

Local Scientific Research Associations. Locally, the most notable award for

Excellence Service was conferred by the Minister of Education in April 2000 for my

participation in the advancement of technical language in fisheries.

The most recent achievement (2007) was on the work with my students which won

a Gold Medal and a Silver Medal at the National Research and Innovation

Competition (NRIC) in Penang, Malaysia.

5.4 Research activities and publications/citations

Being an active researcher, I have disseminated a total of more than 170

publications in the forms of papers in refereed journals, proceedings, papers

presented, reports and theses. Some of the Fish Aggregation Tools research

outputs have been commercialized with support from local companies and

government agencies.
