Reviews of Modern Sports Law “Modern Sports Law, A Textbook, is a very comprehensive and overall original approach to Sports Law. Jack Anderson brings about a fresh approach to the study of the topic. What is undeniable is that it’s a magnificent work, which shows the encyclopaedic knowledge of the author. The books included in the references are numerous and varied, it’s truly impressive...this book would be very appropriate for students with a law degree and even for professionals that want to increase their knowledge about specific areas.

Alfonso Valero, www.lawinsport.com, June 2011 “This recently published book provides a welcome addition for those engaged in the study of legal aspects of sport.[Anderson] has provided careful analysis of many major features of modern sports law. One of the strengths of his work is the way in which he draws useful comparisons between the experience and decisions of the English courts with those of other common law jurisdictions. In addition, the ultimate readers are helped in their understanding by the reasoned and helpful referencing throughout the book. One must also add congratulations to Hart Publishing for their provision of an easy to follow structure and indexing of the text. Finally, it is suggested that Anderson’s book will no doubt be a popular purchase by those who wish to enhance their study and interest in sports, whether as practitioners, students or general readers.” David Dovey, Sport and the Law Journal “..its content is minutely up to date and its analysis is strong and has a distinct and very interesting individuality to it. I, for one, will be recommending the book as an insightful and up-to-date treatise on the discipline that is sports law.” Professor Neville Cox, Irish Jurist “Let me say it directly! Jack Anderson's book is very good and recommended reading for anyone interested in the sport’s future regulation, the standard of development and its relationship to social trends.” Bo Carlsson, Idrottsforum.org, November 2011 “This is a well-researched and well-written Book on “Sports Law” and one that I would heartily and unhesitatingly recommend to students and practitioners alike.” Professor Ian Blackshaw, International Sports Law Journal Reviews of Legality of Boxing Shortlisted for Peter Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship, Society of Legal Scholars, 2008 “…always intriguing and accurate, on sport, law and its general history…Anderson is very well read on boxing law and the book is...[both]...entertaining and accessible.” Professor Steve Redhead, Journal of Law & Society “a thought-provoking and well-researched study.” Professor Ian Blackshaw, International Sports Law Journal, “the most thought-provoking book I read last year.” Ron Lewis, the boxing correspondent of The Times

“[The Legality of Boxing] reads briskly and is a terrific narrative of the sport’s evolution…a measured account of facts, law and history.” Don Steinberg of the Boxing Writers’ Association of America “[The Legality of Boxing] is thoughtful and of particular interest when Anderson turns to the philosophical and ethical issues that surround the fundamental nature of boxing.” Thomas Hauser, www.secondsout.com 7. 18. TEACHING Teaching Portfolio I have extensive experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level at a number of institutions – joining Queen’s in 2004, having previously taught at the Australian National University (2003-4) and the University of Limerick (1998-2002). A detailed teaching portfolio – including a statement on my teaching practice and philosophy and summaries of student and peer evaluations, accounting for the past five academic years – can be supplied on request. Teaching Allocation Since 2004, I have coordinated, on average, four law modules per academic year, which in 2010/11 included the following.

i. Introduction to the Law of Torts: This is a core level 2 module for 240 students on the LLB and Law and Politics/Languages programmes at Queen’s. As module coordinator, I am responsible for presenting lectures and tutorials; dealing with student queries and feedback policies; liaising with colleagues about the syllabus, assessment methods and division of teaching responsibilities; liaising with the external examiner about the collation and marking of scripts; and preparing and drafting of the module review report.

ii. Alternative Dispute Resolution: This is a six-week mandatory module for 180 students on the principal LLB degree programme at Queen’s, upon which I have the sole responsibility for presenting lectures, tutorials and assessment methods. The module introduces students to the range of ADR mechanisms now available in NI as alternatives to court; such as collaborative law; arbitration; (family) mediation; and conciliation.

iii. Sport and the Law: This is an elective module for final year LLB students, usually availed of by 40-50 students and on which I have the sole responsibility for presenting lectures, tutorials and assessment methods. The module reviews the application of traditional branches of the law – private law, EU law, criminal law and commercial law – to a specifically sporting context, and especially as applied to the professional sports industry.

iv. Advanced Law of Torts: This is a mandatory module for the 40 students (approx) on the Master’s of Legal Science (Graduate Entry) programme

and on the School of Law’s JD programme. As module coordinator, I have the sole responsibility for presenting lectures, tutorials and assessment methods; dealing with student queries and feedback policies; liaising with the external examiner about the collation and marking of scripts; and preparing and drafting of the module review report.
