Appendix 2: Societal impact of research

I have been regularly communicating my research results to the media, policy-makers and professional audiences. My main international experience comes from editing a volume on politics of social risk in the Nordics for the Foundation for European Progressive Studies think tank, and the related book launch in Brussels (2012).

In the Finnish national context, my research has been promoted at the front page of Finnish Broadcasting Company and University of Helsinki websites. I’m a regular commentator in the Finnish media including the main newspapers (Helsingin Sanomat), current affairs TV shows (A-Studio) and radio programmes (Politiikkaradio, Ajantasa). I have contributed editorial and other articles to the Finnish mainstream media, including the largest newspapers Helsingin Sanomat and Turun Sanomat, and I have been interviewed for all the main Finnish newspapers and magazines including the national (Helsingin Sanomat, Huvudstadsbladet), financial (Kauppalehti, Talouselämä), regional (Keskisuomalainen, Kainuun Sanomat) and political press (Vihreä Lanka, Kansan Uutiset, Demokraatti).

My strongest public presence has been among the Finnish pension professionals. I have given presentations at the Finnish pension professionals’ two key annual meetings (Työeläkepäivä and Keva-päivä) and the Hyvä Suomi 2020 programme. I also work as a columnist for the Työeläke magazine, which is one of the most broadly distributed professional magazines in Finland. My research was cited in and I was interviewed as the only expert not employed within the pension system for the official evaluation of the governance of the Finnish earnings-related pension system.

I have participated in various debates popularizing scientific research, including for example the Agora for Interdisciplinary Debates at the University of Helsinki, and I have given presentations at various research institute and think tank events, including for example those arranged by The Research Institute of Finnish Economy ETLA, Kalevi Sorsa Foundation, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, and Left Forum Finland. I consulted the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE journalists and two political parties on the financial crisis in 2008.
