SCHOLARLY INTERESTS
My focus is the intersection between Higher Education and Community Development.
Specific topics include experiential education pedagogies such as internships, service-learning,
and field research methods; higher education reform issues such as the scholarship of
engagement, active knowledge and campus community partnerships; and community
development topics of civic participation, and action research.

Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New York City, San Francisco and Cambridge, England.
Team Leader for Internship Seminar, Supervised interns’ senior projects and fieldwork;
developed fieldwork policies; assessed outcomes; coordinated curriculum development
and team instruction.
1992-1996 Director of Internships and Associate Professor of the Practice of Human and
Organizational Development, Vanderbilt University (Peabody College).
1986-1992 Senior Lecturer, Field and International Study Program, College of Human Ecology,
Cornell University. Taught “Preparation for Fieldwork,” internship seminars, and
distance learning course for field study. Supervised students’ action research projects
on community development issues.
1991-1992 Study Abroad Advisor, College of Human Ecology, Cornell University. Supervised
student advisors and counseled students on international education.
1988-1989 Consultant, The Danforth Foundation, Program for Professors of School
Administration. Worked with faculty in The Educational Leadership Program in The
Graduate School of Education at Fordham University to develop and implement a field-
based Ed.D. program.
Spring 1989 Research Associate, U.K. Centres for Experiential Learning and the partnership for
Service-Learning, London. Designed a research project, “The Process of Experience,”
and gathered data from American students involved in service-learning in the U.K.

1985-1988 Director, Field and International Study Program, College of Human Ecology, Cornell
University. Proposed and implemented merger of Field Study Office and International
Education Program. Hired faculty and staff, wrote curriculum proposals, and recruited
students. Responsible for budget, external relations, program development and
instruction.
1986-1987 Director, International Internships Program, Center for International Studies, Cornell
University. Major responsibilities included placing Cornell interns and Co-op students
in Latin American and Western Europe, and placing interns from abroad in the U.S.
Chaired international internships curriculum committee, wrote grant proposals, and
guided program development.
1984-1985 Acting Director, Field Study Office, Cornell University. Responsible for curriculum
development, budget, personnel, and faculty searches. Supervised development of
computerized internship placement database.
1980-1984 Lecturer, Human Ecology and Coordinator of Pre-Field Preparation, Field Study
Office, Cornell University. Taught “Preparation for Fieldwork,” and “The Theory and
Practice of Experiential Learning.” Designed preparation course to have students
practice ethnographic data gathering skills while providing community service.
1970-1972 Adjunct Lecturer, Community Assistant, Experimental Pilot Program, Urban Teacher
Education, City College of New York; Supervised students’ field work in public
elementary schools, co-led weekly seminars, helped students plan and evaluate their
work.
HONORS
Recipient of 2011 Pioneer in Experiential Education Award from the National Society for Experiential
Education.
Recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Research Award from the International Association for Research on
Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.
Joint recipient with Janet Eyler of the National Society for Experiential Education’s Experiential
Education Researcher of the Year for 2008.
Recipient, with Janet Eyler, 2003 Campus Compact’s National Ehrlich Award for Faculty Service-
Learning.
