CLINICAL ACTIVITY: Dr. Knoop independently organized and directed a clinical reference laboratory for the evaluation of patients with toxigenic gastrointestinal illnesses, including a rapid and specific diagnostic test for the recognition of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile. Specific tests for enterotoxigenic, enterohemorrhagic, enteroadherent and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli were also routinely available and tests for the detection of other microbial toxins associated with human diseases, including tetanus, botulism and Exotoxin A, were accessible upon request. The service was available on a routine basis during the week; emergency requests during weekends and holiday periods were accepted. The service was initiated in 1980, was certified by The College of American Pathologists and HCFA/CLIA certification ID#28D0705600, and had completed a total of 8996 clinical assays through 4-1-96, when the diagnostic tests were claimed by the Department of Pathology. He currently acts as a consultant for C. difficile tests.
