SPECIALISATION – Notable Career Achievement
As a manager and tree mechanics assessor/educator (VTA - Visual Tree Assessment) I
co-developed the Utility ETS/Energex VTA Program which ran from 2007-2012, (the
program was suspended in the 2012 Queensland Government cutbacks) though fully
covered the Energex Network (Brisbane to Tin Can Bay), assessed by myself and tree
surveyors that I trained for Eastern Tree Service (ETS). At the 2009 Newcastle ISAAC
conference the VTA Program was publically credited to me (for technical development)
on behalf of ETS by Energex Guest speakers Matthew Palmer and Paul Blackmore.
Since 1999 I have written numerous technical reports/articles, which were published in
the Australian Arbor Age.
As a part of my development of a Target Pruning Manual (based on the work of Dr.
Alex Shigo) for ETS, I created the Target Pruning Poster in 2008, which achieved over
100 sales Australia/NZ wide. The poster is a significant educational tool for staff training
(note – the manual was also published as an AAA article).
ETS Target Pruning Poster
The Target Pruning Manual was reviewed by prior to publishing by Judy Shigo –
daughter of Dr. Alex Shigo the father of Arboriculture

Notable Career Achievements Continued –
Following the November 16th storm I requested and gained a commission from Energex
to gather data on tree failures and veteran trees of the storm. The trees on the 3 HV
feeders hit by the storm in the Gap I had previously inspected for Energex, utilising the
ETS VTA data collection system as a means to observe and record the trees mechanical
status.
As a result of 90 hours in the field (immediately after the storm and during the storm
clean up) I gained significant insight into the urban forest surrounding the Gap.
With over 1200 photographs taken the report is a summary of my observations in relation
to storm damaged trees and veteran trees of the storm (a total of 136 hours to complete
the project).
I re-appraised all trees that I had scheduled for work in my original inspection in mid
2007 ref - Risk Category Energex Maintenance Instruction MI-019.
With data collection as well as reassess the trees adjacent to powerlines I incorporated the
random meander method, I appraised parks, streets and domestic gardens where visible
from the street or where I was invited by members of the public.
The report was published as a two-part Australian Arbor Age article (2008), I also
developed a power point presentation on the storm data which was run for BCC and the
QAA (Qld Arboricultural Association). The ETS/Energex report/Arbor Age article can
be seen via this link -

19 Past articles - 2008 to 2015 can be viewed under Education on Naturaculture a not-
for-profit arboricultural web site www.naturaculture.com.au
Since working on the ETS/Energex VTA Program and assessing numerous Gum tree
populations throughout S.E. Qld I observed and recorded a range of unusual symptoms
relating to VTA. These where recorded in past Energex reports and AAA articles. The
most significant of which involves a serious disorder affecting gum trees. The disorder I
named Canker Syndrome causes gum tree decline, death and mechanical failure. This
follows four years of data gathered by me for Energex. The full report can be viewed
under the Education link to Naturaculture – ETS/Energex report – Canker Syndrome
