    My path, in short

I graduated at the Faculty of Architecture of Ferrara in 2002, with a thesis on the Restoration of monuments,

with special regards to the Italian Renaissance. In the same University I follwed a PhD course in Civil

Engineering, concluded in 2006 with a thesis on the seismic analysis and structural consolidation of oldmasonry buildings.

Later I collaborated with an interdisciplinary group of the same University, working in the eld of urban

restoration, in the framework of Unesco programmes. Since the same years Im also studying transcendental

phenomenology, which opened to me the way to new approaches to the design and analysis of spatial solutions.

In 2007 I moved to the Netherlands, where I could work on the themes of architectural and urban design with

special reference for residential developments and school buildings, and within an approach of sustainability,

    durability, and energetic efciency.

In 2009 I moved back to Italy, where I started to work in the elds of sustainable architecture and urbanism,

and of the renewable energies, with special regards for complex administrative procedures, pilot projects,

    environmental impacts and landscaping.

In the last years I developed as an indipentent designer and project manager, especially dealing with urban

regeneration processes, strategic planning and european design; for further information about me you may

    visit my Linked-In account.

    "A NEWLIVABILITYFORTHECENTEROFNONANTOLA"

Keywords: Two-phases Urban Design Competition / Nonantola / Multidisciplinary group / Urban

    Renewal / 2013 / 4th place / http://europaconcorsi.com/projects/242143

My role: Teamleader / Architect / Urban designer

Nonantola is an italian historical city of about 10.000 inhabitants, a few chilometers northern than

Modena, with a medieval Abbey and an important annexed Archive. The Municipality is aiming

to recover the original importance of the historical center, which is undermined by a heavy

trafc ow separating it from the perifery. Basing on the opening of a new bypass street, which will

considerably reduce the amount of trafc through the city, the competition fostered the genesis of a

new "urban vision", centered on the requalication of unbuilt surfaces between center and perifery, nowadays used as parking areas.

Our project was based upon the following themes:

    - linking the center with the peripheryby means of a new system of soft mobility axes (walking

and bike lanes), connecting the most important functional areas of the city and creating an enlarged

    center characterized by a wider range of functions and opportunities;

    - encouraging the use of peripherical parking areas, by connecting them with the soft mobility

    system;

    - converting the unbuilt surfaces around the center into new urban spaces, acting as condensers of

    a new relationship between center and periphery;

    - integrating the existing green areas at the north and south ends of the city into a continuous

greenway, extending into the countryside and equipped by a bike lane.

center; Below: the functional areas of Nonantola and the new system of soft mobility axis

The project area n. 1 is actually occupied by a parking lot, and by a scarsely used green area; the

project proposed there the passage of the "Greenway" axis of the new soft mobility system,

linking the city to the countryside and the Agricoltural Park.

The other two project areas were conceived as a system of new public spaces.

The area n. 2, facing an old medieval tower, is actually occupied by a parking lot and a small

garden; a new "leisure square" was propsed there, directly connected with the old city square,

and surrounded by both sides by a new public garden.

The new square will host the access to the new public library, for which the proposal was made, of

moving it inside the old palace of the Municipality.

The area n. 3, facing the Abbey, is actually occupied by a large parking lot; there a new enlargedAbbey yardwas proposed, hosting an extension of the Abbey museum.

This system of public spaces will be connected by a new inner walking ringpassing through the

Abbey garden, and creating a stimulating and integrated urban environment.

    PILOTPROJECTFORSMALLHYDROPLANTS

    KEYWORDS: APPENNINO/ REGGIOEMILIA / 2013 / BECQUERELE LECTRICS.R.L. / PROJECTMANAGER

    ARCHITECT/ MULTIDISCIPLINARYTEAM/ AUTHORIZED

My role: Project Manager and co-Designer

In 2011 Becquerel Electric S.r.l. proposed a wide plan for the Appennino mountains next to

my city, nowadays undergoing a heavy process of depopulation and IMPOVERIMENTO,

based on the developing of a renewable energy industry based on the natural resources

    available on place.

A stream was individuated as the site for a pilot project, in which to apply the state-of-the-artknowkedge as for what regards the compatibility between hydro-energy production and the

    environment and landscapes preservation.

In order to this, a multidisciplinary team was set up, including geologists, biologists,

ichthyologists, botanics, engineers, environmental and nature scientists, master builders,

landscapers, architects, urban and energy planners, working together in a fully integrated

    working ow.

The design process was supported by the partecipation of the inhabitants of the place, and

was concluded by the creation of a collective self-organized enterprise, which will offer to

local people and companies the chance to become share-holders of the initiative, and hence,

to maximize the local economic output.

The project was authorized by the Region in april 2014.

    Techincal data of the plant:

Type of hydro-plant: owing water; maximum power: 470 kW; estimated yearly production:

    710 kWh; tube lenght: 970 m; idraulic head: 130 m; production estimated start-up: end 2015

    RESTORATIONOFANANCIENTSTONEHOUSE

Key-words: Small Community / Agri-touristic Activities / Passive Solar House / Gypsum mount / Reggio

    Emilia / 2014 / Preliminary Design

    My role: Freelance Architect

As a Freelance Architect I made the preliminary design for the restoration of an ancient stone house,

located on the slopes of the Gypsum mount of Reggio Emilia, a beautiful abandoned valley in the

northern Appennini, once dedicated to agricoltural residence.

Purpose of the reconstruction is the settlement of a small semi-indipendent community, whose intention

is that of recovering the old agricoltural practices on the slopes. Because of the location, the project had

to do without the connections with the gas and sewage networks, and therefore the south exposition of

the building was used, by proposing the creation of an in-built solar glasshouse, able to provide a big

contribution both to the lighting and heating systems. Thank to this, the house reaches the standard of

a N.Z.E.B. house (Nearly Zero Energy Building).

The design met the prelminar approval of the Municipal Commission (feb. 2015).

    NURSINGHOME"MATTIOLIGARAVINI"

Key-words: Extension of a social care center / Casalgrande / Reggio Emilia /

    Bisi & Merkus / 2010 / Under construction

    My role: Designer

The existing social care center already includes a small nursing home

and an assistance center for heavily handicapped persons; in addition,

the society Mattioli-Garavini commissioned a new nursing home for 42

elderly people, including an Alzheimer-affected people ward.

The project proposed to concentrate all the services in the basement,

while the rst two oors are dedicated to the Nursery, and a last oor

    dedicated to the Alzheimer ward.

Great importance was accorded to endow the new facility with high

spatial standards and with well-centered care and socialization areas.

A key target of the project was also the creation of a strong connection

with the outer spaces, provided both by a safe walking garden directly

accessible from the ground oor, and by the relationship with the

surrounding landscape, made of a beautiful green hillside, granted by

the wide glass surfaces of the rooms. Particular attention was paid to the

climate control, and to the energy efciency of the building.

    Requalication of the historic watefront

    Key-words: Brindisi / inner harbour / Dodi Moss / Requalication / Master Plan / 2010 / Built

My role: Urban Planner / Urban Designer

The project concerned the proposal of a masterplan for the renewal of the inner harbour of the city, and the

requalication of the urban docks of the historical center. The masterplan proposed a reconnection of the

different functional areas located around the harbour , which are actually split, and the relocation of

valuable functions, such as culture, leisure, relax, hospitality and restauration, around the "core" of the harbour,

where the historical center is also located. Such a "hot spot" was conceived as a new "water square" of the

city, supported by a new public water transport system, connecting the main functional elements around theinner harbour, and well integrated with the urban mobility system. The whole plan aimed to the creation of

a wide, rich, unique and well connected multifunctional water urban area, acting as a regional-level pole of

attraction. As rst part of the renewal plan, the new docks of the historical center were conceived as a "stone

square"facing the "water square", where the linear elements of the palm trees, a gray stone street, the white

stone walinkg areas, the led-based lighting system, the stone benches and the dehors of restaurants and cafes

were conceived as irregular crossing layers.

    My role: Assistant Designer

Along Laan van Zuid will rise a long and narrow urban block, composed

of ve apartment buildings on the front and 32 row houses at the back. The

ve buildings are connected by a back-set two-storeys plint, providing wide

spatial openings to the street level. Five detailed masonry patternshave been

studied in order to give to every building an individual characterization, insidea recognizable urban language made of variations and counterpoints. Particular

attention was paid to the solution of the corners by the short sides of the block,

    designed as relevant urban accents.
