RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Plant parasitic nematodes are serious constraints to crop productivity and cause severe

losses. They require urgent need to control the recent removal of many key nematicides due

to environmental problem has generated interest of workers in searching for alternative

nematode control methods. Most of them are non-chemical methods such as cultural and

biological nematode management programme. These are not only relevant to the present day

needs but would go a long way in solving the problem in the years to come. These researches

are not only going in the developing countries but also being explored in the advanced

industrialised countries. I have also worked on one of these aspects for my Ph.D. Thesis. The

topic of research was:

“STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF ORGANIC SOIL AMENDMENTS ON PLANT

PARASITIC NEMATODES”

Most of the research findings on which my Ph.D. Thesis based, have been published

in various reputed international journals. Besides, I also worked on some other problems

related to my field. The summary is given below:

1. ORGANIC AMENDMENTS IN NEMATODES CONTROL

Oil-seed cakes together with deep ploughing were used for the control of plant

parasitic nematodes infesting a large number of crops. The beneficial effects were evident

even after a lapse of six months. Soil amendments with chopped plant parts of margosa, Persian lilac latex-bearing plants, marigolds, water hyacinth and various other plant wastes

were also utilized. Water extracts of different parts of margosa, Persian lilac, tagetes, lemon

grass and lattices of latex bearing plants were thoroughly investigated against nematodes.

Nematode management was also achieved by bare-root-dip and seed dressing

treatments in leaf extract of margosa, Persian liliac, neem chemicals and lattices.

2. NEMATICIDES

Water extracts of different chemicals were thoroughly investigated. Several

nematodes were used for the control of nematodes. Control of nematodes by bare-root-dips

and seed dressings in nematicides were studied. Effect of nematicides/insecticides on fungi

was also studied.

3. SOIL SOLARIZATION

Effect of soil solarization together with oil cakes/nematicides on nematode population

and plant was studied. The reduction in nematode population was due to the increase in soil

temperature. The efficiency enhanced when it was combined with oil cakes/nematodes.

4. CROPPING SEQUNECES AND INTERCULTURE OF CROPS

Twenty nine cropping sequences were studied for the management of plant parastitic

nematodes. Effect of deep ploughing coupled with cropping on nematodes was also studied.

Effect of interculture of margosa, Persian lilac, marigolds and zinnia with some

vegetables on the plant growth and against plant parasitic nematodes was studied. The

reduction in nematode population was observed to be due to the nema-toxic chemicals

released alongwith root exudates of these plants.

5. VARIETAL REACTION OF PLANTS

Nine species of Amaranthus were tested against the root-knot and reinform nematode

to locate resistance, if any.

6. SEASONAL FLUCTUATION EFFECT

Seasonal fluctuations in the population of plant parasitic nematodes with some

economically important plants were studied.

7. WATER ABSORBPTION

Water absorption capability in relation to nematode infestation and nematode-fungus

complex was investigated.

8. OTHER EXPERIMENTS

Effect of viral infection of plants on soil fungi and nematodes was also studied.
