Research

Notable Accomplishments

(a) First use of coupled finite element / boundary element model for rotordynamic response

simulation.

(b) First use of multi-mode model for pad flexibility effect in tilt pad bearing simulation.

(c) First experimental demonstration for the active vibration control of resonance amplification

factor, stability and transient imbalance response of a high speed rotating machine utilizing

feedback control and piezoelectric actuators. Demonstrated on lab test rig and helicopter gas

turbine test rig at NASA Glenn.

(d) Magnetic suspension controller (now US patented) for the first high speed energy storage

flywheel to exceed 60,000 rpm. Demonstrated at US Flywheels Corporation for NASA Glenn.

(e) First electromagnetically biased, magnetic bearing and motor stator to exceed 1,000F at high

speeds (>10,000 rpm). Demonstrated up to 25,000 rpm at NASA Glenn. This achievement was

recognized by receiving a R&D 100 award in 2003, jointly presented to researchers from my lab,

NASA Glenn, University of Toledo, and myself.

(f) First permanent magnet biased, magnetic bearing to demonstrate 400 lb static load capability

at high temperature (>900F).

(g) First magnetic bearing supported energy storage flywheel to successfully operate at zero

gravity (C-9 flights over the Gulf of Mexico)

(h) First high temperature motor coils for planned internal use in nuclear reactor actuation

application. Coils successfully demonstrated at 900F at TAMU.

(i) Design and demonstration of the first permanent magnet biased, homopolar, redundant

magnetic bearing (Now US Patented). Demonstrated at NASA Glenn.

(j) First cryogenic impact damper to be successfully demonstrated. This was performed in a test

facility at TAMU utilizing liquid nitrogen.
