Curriculum Map Unit Review Process Protocol for Vertical Articulation
Purpose
• Better understand the vertical curriculum
• Check standards alignment
• Examine skills for gaps/redundancies
• Raise questions to be considered/addressed
Protocol
Be non-judgmental – You are not critiquing individual maps.
1. Appoint a facilitator to keep the group on task and discourage debate, a timekeeper, and a
recorder. The purpose of this process is to identify the questions and areas that need to be
discussed using a protocol where all voices are heard.
2. Use the comparative unit calendar directions below to compare units on your device. Begin
with red reading unit first.
3. Each teacher reads the units silently, without discussion.
4. Record your thoughts in each area: Ah Hah’s, standards alignment, skills alignment (gaps
and redundancies) and questions/comments. (5-7 minutes)
5. Go around the table with each team member speaking: first ah-hah’s, then standards
alignment, skills gaps/ redundancies, questions/comments. Recorder will document during
the sharing session on one electronic 4-square document. Each team member shares without
discussion. (1-2 minutes per team member.)
6. After each person has shared, team discusses trends and/or patterns noted and implications
for possible revisions. (5-7 minutes)
7. Use the same process for the green writing units.
8. Each team will share 3-4 key points from the reading unit and 3-4 key points from the
writing unit. (post on chart paper.)
