In their first year we aim to lay foundations for future learning experiences. All children can become competent learners, be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. We are committed to establishing positive partnership with parents and children to enable children to be strong and independent from a base of caring and secure relationships. We provide an environment that plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning. We recognise that children develop in different ways and different rates and that all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected. We aim to achieve a balance between child initiated and adult led activities. Throughout the year we deliver a range of activities to meet the diverse interests of the children to support their development, teaching and learning. This incorporates a visit to Willows Farm, walks in the environment, and celebrations of different cultures with visitors/parents to support. We encourage visitors giving talks about their areas of expertise. The children have the opportunity to take part in a Christmas Production which is presented to the whole school and their parents.

The transition between Reception and Year One is planned for and carefully managed in the Summer term at the end of Reception and in the Autumn term. Outdoor learning opportunities are provided more regularly at the beginning of the year to enable a smooth transition. Subjects are incorporated into theme teaching, for example: In the Autumn term the theme is ‘The Geography of Our School’; the children will study Science (the Seasons), Art (self-portrait) and Literacy (labelling) through this theme. This ensures learning is creative and cross-curricular and most importantly, exciting! The theme approach to teaching and outdoor learning continues throughout the year providing opportunities to take learning beyond the classroom. The children will use the local area to help with the development of their geographical and citizenship skills as well as enjoying trips further afield i.e. Local museums, Legoland, places of worship. During curriculum weeks and as part of our theme we also invite members of the local community to visit our children, thus continuing to develop community cohesion. By the end of Year One we aim to have developed the children’s ability to work more independently and to be responsible for themselves and their belongings. This will provide a firm foundation for the children as they move into Year Two.

In this final year of Key Stage 1, we aim to inspire creativity, promote independence and initiative and encourage the children to take responsibility for their own learning. Year 2 is a year of fun! Learning takes place through a series of theme-based units and we provide opportunities to learn in and out of the classroom. Visits and visitors enhance and enrich a broad and balanced curriculum. Throughout Year 2, the children will explore new skills, new places and new challenges. This will allow them to achieve their full potential at the end of Key Stage assessments. Every child matters! We teach the importance of valuing others and to be respectful. Each day is filled with fun and excitement. We firmly believe that a day without laughter is a day wasted. It is always sad at the end of the year when we have to say goodbye, but we are particularly proud of the mature individuals that they have become.

In Year 3 we aim to provide a broad, balanced and distinctive curriculum that inspires children with opportunities to develop their independence through skill based activities. Literacy and mathematics skills and knowledge will be taught daily as building blocks in a cross curricular manner to support independent learning during our themed sessions and subject specific areas. We aim to equip the children with a positive attitude towards learning by offering them confidence building opportunities in a purposeful, happy and motivational setting, for example through performance and media.

Year 4 is exciting and fun-packed, and builds on the excellent foundations that have been established in Year 3. We aim to develop children’s knowledge and understanding through a skills-based and personalised curriculum in a variety of scenarios. It is dynamic, creative and innovative, and will inspire children to become lifelong learners. Confidence is developed throughout the year through regular participation in assemblies and larger scale performances.

Promoting independence is at the heart of everything we do. In particular, children will be given their first opportunity to experience a residential visit where they are confronted with a range of challenges (not least putting on a duvet cover!). In addition to this, a range of visits give the children the chance to explore the world outside their classroom. All of this blends together to make a purposeful and memorable year for children and staff alike.

In their penultimate year at Oakthorpe there is a real emphasis on encouraging the children’s independent learning skills. These are the fundamental building blocks needed for success throughout their academic journey ahead. Year 5 promote a personalised learning approach to cater for every child’s needs. This allows children to take ownership of their progression through this inspirationally distinctive journey. This curriculum now includes a themed approach, encompassing a natural fusion of subjects. Furthermore, the children are exposed to team building activities during camp, curriculum weeks, the year 5 and 6 show, radio broadcasting, film editing and the residential and activity week experience (but to name a few). Not forgetting our weekly commendable assemblies along with our daily dose of fun and adventure!

In this final year, as the children complete their journey through Oakthorpe, they will be exploring new skills, new places and new challenges. They will have the opportunity to “perform”, realising their potential in both creative and academic contexts. We aim to develop children’s independence in preparation for secondary school involving them in collaborative projects; allowing children to take more responsibility not only for their own learning but also for building positive relationships with others. They will have access to the curriculum in many forms: clubs, curriculum weeks, celebrations, shows, assemblies, visits and visitors. We aim to foster a dynamic approach to learning through a variety of approaches in order for every child to understand and reach their potential.
