Horror and Supernatural
Skills to be
developed
To recognise and appreciate the characteristics of gothic and supernatural fiction.
Recognise and understand the characteristics of challenging texts in terms of language,
theme, structure and organisation / presentation.
To confidently read and discuss a range of continuous and non-continuous texts, showing
understanding and engagement through a personal and justified response.
Express opinions clearly about topics and written texts, supporting opinions with reasons
and some evidence.
Use the characteristic features of a wide range of continuous and non-continuous texts
creatively in their own writing, adapting style and tone to sustain readers’ interest, using
imagination where appropriate.
Craft their writing by using the standard forms of English e.g. nouns, pronouns, adjectives,
adverbs, prepositions, connectives and verb tenses.
Select and use words carefully from a wide range of adventurous and imaginative
vocabulary.
Proof-reads and evaluate their own work and that of others using peer / self-assessment
strategies; make clear recommendations for improvement; edit / redraft to show
progression.

Look at a selection of gothic horror clips and posters and complete chart.
Look at a selection of gothic horror book covers and rank them in order of the most to least effective.
Watch a gothic horror trailer and make notes on plot, character, conventions etc…
Write a blurb for a novel based on this film.
Make a list of typical features of gothic horror films and stories; for example, scary old houses, moonlight, vampires. Students to sort their features into categories; for example, weather, buildings, people, places, moods. Feedback and compile a class list of gothic horror features.
Read Dracula – Extract 2 - Worksheet 1b,
In groups, pupils complete grid summarising each of the three haunted houses: Sker House, Craig-y-Nos and Plas Teg. Which one would they spend the night in for £1000 (giving reasons).
Introduce Llancaiach Fawr webpage. Individually, pupils complete worksheet on Llancaiach Fawr.

Read extract from New Moon, focusing on character of Edward. Pupils then complete grid outlining ways that Edward is stereotypical / unusual for a vampire.
Read extract from Her Fearful Symmetry. Pupils to infer what sort of ghost Elspeth is. Worksheet 8b (PPT slide 3). Annotate short section of text – what impressions do we get of Elspeth?
Read opening paragraphs of The Hunt and The Graveyard Book and Breathe. What impression is created of central character in each?
Watch clips of various media representations of Frankenstein’s monster and make notes about how he is represented.
Read Frankenstein extract. What impression of the monster is created? How?

As per the first half term, pupils are moving into 3 different specialisms which carousel
during the year. The projects will end on Friday 13 November. The groups will then move to
a new teacher from 16 November until 29 January.
Mrs Finselbach – Graphics project– quizzes will be put on every other Friday and
PowerPoints are available in the Files are of your class Team.
Mr Kinsella – Woodwork project - quizzes will be put on every other Friday and
PowerPoints are available in the Files are of your class Team.
Mrs Cavill – Food Technology project - quizzes will be put on every other Friday and
PowerPoints are available in the Files are of your class Team.
The fourth part carousel is PSE with Dr Preece.
