    SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

    Find the root word

Root is the only part of the word that can stand alone. Many roots are real words in their own right: graph (a diagram) and

term (a fixed time or date), are good examples of this. In most

cases, roots need to be combined with other word elements,

like prefixes, suffixes, or even other roots to make sense. A

prefix (before the root) is added to a root to change its

meaning. The suffix (after the root) is added to a root to

define its part of speech (noun, verb, and adverb).

Starting with the list of root (prefix) words below, have your child make his own chart of 25 root words, definitions, and

examples. Have him try to think of as many examples for each

root word as he can. Using a chart paper and listing the words

per prefix root helps for referencing and allows your child to

    add more later.

Once he gets a hearty list of examples going for each root prefix, have your child write a sentence for each one. For

  • example: Root: hydra. Example: hydrant. Sentence: The fire-fighters turned on the hydrant to hook up the hoses.

Encourage your child to investigate more root words, their meanings, and the connections he can make to other words by

simply knowing the root. It's amazing the logic you will notice

behind words and how we communicate!

Have your child display his chart for a few days or weeks, either on the fridge or in another prominent position. After

they hang around for a while, can your child add more to the

    existing list?

    Some Examples:

    Root Definition Examples

    Hydra Water Hydration, hydrofoil

    Therm Heat Thermometer, thermostat

    Graph Write Graphics, biography

    Dict Say Dictionary, dictation

    Geo Earth Geology, geography

    Path Feeling Apathy, sympathy

    Vit Life Vitamin, vitalize

    Meet my family

Allow the child to interact with all family members.

He/she could draw their faces or paste their pictures on slam sheets.

The child should describe the person in the picture using appropriate

adjectives and abstract nouns in a paragraph.

  • Encourage the child to write about as many members as he can.

Then he should find out the following:

    The hardest working member________________

    The funniest member______________________

    The tallest member____________________

    The shortest member__________________

The person with the best smile________________

    The most polite person___________________

    The most short tempered person____________

    The most disciplined person_____________

Make it in a colourful booklet and bring it to class.

Take the class on a walk to a field. Take off shoes and walk through the field in socks. At the end of the walk, examine

socks to find out what hitchhiker seeds are attached to

students’ socks (be sure to scout the area first for any sharp objects or poison ivy!)

Write a story, create a comic strip or make a poster about the

adventures of a seed as it travels away from its original plant.

  • Activity -Musical Fractions

Students explore fractions while writing a colorful melody, without

even knowing how to read music! Fill glasses up with different fractions

of water and add food coloring. Provide students with paper to write

their songs. Have kids formulate a hypothesis about why the glasses of

water project different sounds. Is it the color of the water? No!

Students will be wowed at how water level makes an impact on the

sound that projects from each glass. The fraction of water in each

    glass produces a different pitch.

Player chooses a positive even number that is less than 10 and chooses

out number to cross out. Then in second turn chooses a number to

cross out that must be a factor or multiple of the first number. Take

turn to cross out at each stage choosing a number just crossed out by

    the number before.

  • Wastepaper Basketball Data collection and Decimal Game

What You Need: Wastebasket, Trash ball, Paper ,Pencil

What You Do: 1. Explain to your child that you are going to play wastepaper

Basketball. Record your successes and failures. Have your child set up the

wastebasket a reasonable distance from the throw line. Suggest that each of you

attempt to throw a trash ball into the basket 10 times.

    2. Rotating turns, throw the ball ten times each. After each throw, record your

own results. You can make a chart to show successful and failed attempts.

    3. Now that you have your data, it's time to find the fraction which reflects each

of your results. Start by showing the fraction of your attempts and then let your

child find his fraction. For example, if you were successful 4 times then the

fraction of your successful attempts is 4 by 10. The ratio that shows your failed

    attempts is 6 by 10.

    4. Next, show your child how to write the fraction in decimal form. In this

example, the decimal 0.4 shows your successes and the decimal 0.6 shows your

    failures.

    Let’s form the decimal number

What You Need: o Paper o Pencil o Deck of cards (Remove face cards, tens and Jokers)

What You Do: 1. Each player should create her own scorecard on a horizontal

sheet of paper. Divide the paper into 5 columns, with a decimal point after the

third column. At the top of each column write the following in order from left to

right: Hundreds, Tens, Ones (decimal point), Tenths, Hundredths. 2. Have your

child shuffle the deck and deal 5 cards to each player, placing them face down. 3.

When you say, "Go!" players flip their cards over and arrange them in order to

create the largest number possible. 4. When finished, players should compare

cards. The player who has the largest number wins a point. If the results are

  • equal, each player receives a point. 5. Have the players record their numbers on

the place value mat. 6. Whoever has the highest score after the fifth round wins!
