Writing – uses of Word Processing

• produce neat finished product– copying out hand written draft to produce

'best' copy

• drafting and redrafting– shows development of thought and quality

- print out each version

• composing directly into word processor– collaborative writing

Writing – Hand writing and

typing physical difficulty can prevent children

from writing extended pieces• concept keyboard

– enter word / phrase at a time– use of picture prompts with words

but– composition with concept keyboard is

limited by overlay

Writing – Hand writing and typing 2

• QWERTY keyboard– will a child who finds writing difficult be able to master

using a keyboard ?– young children use word shape as aid to forming word,

but with keyboard have to enter word letter by letter

problems– where are the letters ? - all over the place– children use lower case letters, but keys have upper

case(cf fonts and inappropriate shaped letters - look at

Futura, Comic Sans, Block Letters, Avante Garde

Book, Century Gothic, HoratioD, Primer Print, Cartoonist Hand )

– not practising hand writing

Word Processing – Word level

• spell checker – multimedia versions available - sound and

text togetherbut

– does not indicate wrong word spelled correctly– cannot recognise highly phonetic mis-spelling

• thesaurus– extend vocabulary by picking synonyms

Page 13: Curriculum ICT Using ICT to support Reading and Writing

• move around sentences and blocks of text by means of cut and paste– trying out alternative arrangements

of sentences– aid to drafting– aid to collaborative writing

Page 14: Curriculum ICT Using ICT to support Reading and Writing

Word Processing – Writing Frames

• provides document structure• fill in each section with your own

words / ideas– helps young children work with

complex ideas– trying out different styles of text

Page 15: Curriculum ICT Using ICT to support Reading and Writing

Writing - Factual Writing

• record facts, findings, observations, thoughts from group

• structure findings by moving text around (teacher can see, at a glance, what has been

discussed)• making action plans

– record possible actions– sequence them correctly

Page 17: Curriculum ICT Using ICT to support Reading and Writing

Word Processing – Drafting

• effort of rewriting / copying out removed

"I write less. I have less to copy."

• helps self esteem– no signs of crossing out– errors have disappeared

Page 18: Curriculum ICT Using ICT to support Reading and Writing

Word Processing – Drafting 2

importance of drafting• recording of text allows ideas to

be re-read and reflected upon• writing should be seen as

something that can be changed, experimented with

• part of the process of learning

Page 19: Curriculum ICT Using ICT to support Reading and Writing

Word Processing – Drafting 3

but• children tend to compose sentence by

sentence, only ever re-reading the last sentence

• they are reluctant to redraft• teacher needs to question and guide

discussion around the composition of the story and prompt redrafts
