Issue 17, 4 December 2014

This weekend draws our CEA fixtures to the end for 2013. This year has been an enjoyable one, seeing many of our students develop skills, face challenges, create and strengthen relationships and present high levels of sportsmanship at all times.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the volunteers who made this year possible. The guidance, support and coaching that you provide for the boys has been second to none. I can affirm this through many students praising the efforts of coaches throughout the 2014 season.

I would like to wish everyone in the Sacred Heart College Middle School community a happy and safe Christmas break and look forward to another exciting CEA season in 2015.

Middle School ChoirAs I write this article, the choir is preparing for their final performances for the year, the first being a lunchtime concert on Thursday 27 November, combined with the guitar ensemble (lead by Neil Christopher) and finally during Good News Assembly on the last day of the term. I would like to commend the boys who chose to return to choir this term, even after an intensive program in Term 3, culminating with a performance in the Catholic Schools Music Festival. This term, the boys prepared for Band Sandwich, by rehearsing at lunchtime with the guitar ensemble. It certainly was very rewarding to see them perform on the night, along with the guitar ensemble and 2 percussion students. Thank you to Jet Barbaro, Ben Cook, Jayden Cooper, Dante DeIeso, Emmanuel Deng, Fabian D’Mello, Lachlan Hocking, Fletcher Luscombe and Braydon McPherson, for your commitment this term. I hope that you may continue this commitment in 2015 and beyond. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students involved in the choir and vocal programs during 2014, especially the vocal students, Sam Harris and Blake Flanagan. To Sam, I wish you all the best in your musical ventures as you begin your senior school years and to Blake, I look forward to working with you again in 2015. I would also like to thank all families and staff who have assisted and supported me in any way this year. Thank you for your feedback along the way and I look forward to more great singing next year. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and prosperous New Year. Phillip Hughes1988–2014

Every cricketer in the world joined Phillip’s team. That display of universal love and respect

speaks volumes about this young man, it tells us about those who knew him best

and what they felt for him.Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland

CricketFirstly, I would like to thank the Middle School for allowing me the opportunity to coach the Year 9B cricket team in Term 4. The boys represented the school and themselves very well, playing all games in a mature and sportsmanlike manner.

In term 4, the boys played 5 games during which they had a 7 point win over PAC @ PAC and 2 close losses, one to St Michael’s 9A team losing by just 8 runs and the second against PAC 8A team losing by 17 runs.

Individually the boys stepped up and played their roles when needed. I was very impressed with the standard of fielding and bowling from the boys with little improvement needed for batting. All in all, the boys seemed to enjoy finishing their time at the school playing cricket with their mates and in the Marist spirit.

Thank you once again to the school for giving me this opportunity and also a special thank you to all the parents who came out and supported and also gave me a helping hand, you should all be very proud of your sons.Blake Harding

25 OctoberYear 6/7SHCMS Blue B3 (5/92) defeated Westminster (7/76) Thomas Marshall 26 retired, Caleb Skipworth 11 retired, Kyle Pengilly 10. Ethan Rothe 3/17, Kyle Pengilly 2/4, Damon McCarty 1/3. Great team effort for our first game for the term. Some positive batting where we defended the good ball and punished the bad ball. In the field, the talk and enthusiasm was fantastic. Our bowling was accurate with very few wides compared to the opposition, being a key to the win.

1 NovemberYear 6/7SHCMS A (7/111) defeated Westminster (10/73)SHCMS won the toss and elected to bat. Batting: Tom Pearce 28 NO, Will Day 18 NO, Josh Aulert 14, Darcy Ruth 10 NO, Ben Stewart 10 NO. Bowling: Ben Stewart 4/9, Tom Pearce 2/5, Jack Ramage 1/3, Darcy Ruth 1/7. Good end to the season, we have had fun and have played the game in good spirit. Good luck boys in the Knockout Final.

1 NovemberYear 6/7SHCMS Blue B3 (8/45) lost to Pulteney (6/111)Kyle Pengilly 2/2, Thomas Marshall 1/7, Damon McCarty 1/9, Dylan Drakos-Fuller 1/14. Thomas Marshall 15.

A good effort in the field. The bowling in general wasn’t as good as last week with 20 wides not helping our cause. One player for Pulteney dominated their innings so if we had of got him out early, it could have been a different ball game. The boys really put their head down in the batting, but struggled to get the score on the board against a very good bowling side. A late collapse saw us come well short of the target. We learnt a few things in this game, and we know what to work on at training to be ready for next week.

8 NovemberYear 6/7SHCMS Blue B3 (9/91) lost to Pembroke (4/144)Caleb Skipworth 1/8, Hugh Kiddy 1/10, Ethan Rothe 1/13Damon McCarty 22, Jack Gallagher 21A good effort in the field highlighted by Daniel Moore’s direct hit run-out, but we were always going to fall short in the run chase despite good batting efforts from Damon & Jack.

15 NovemberYear 6/7SHCMS Blue B3 (8/58) lost to St Andrew’s (2/149)Angus Fraser 22 no, Beau McRae 9Angus Fraser 1/14, Zac Munn 1/15Angus held the innings together with his 22. The boys bowled very well (only 4 wides) but unfortunately we had little luck. Certainly no shame in losing to this side who had probably the best bowling side I have seen at primary level.

29 NovemberYear 6/7SHCMS Blue B3 (5/126) defeated St Michael’s (7/96). Kyle Pengilly 21, Thomas Marshall 17 ret, Tom Brady 19, Damon McCarty 15no, Jack Spyker 14 ret, Dylan Drakos-Fuller 9no.Caleb Skipworth 3/3, Daniel Moore 2/16, Thomas Marshall 1/4A great finish to the season for the boys. A solid effort with the bat with everyone contributing. With only 9 in the field the boys showed plenty of enthusiasm in the field, despite the heat. Some good bowling and catching led to a comfortable win.

It was a pleasure to coach the Blue B3 boys this term. The improvement shown from the start to finish was significant, especially in their confidence and the way they went about their cricket. As a coach I was very happy with our 2 wins from 5 games for the term. The win last Saturday against St Michaels, where we fought for a win with 9 players in the heat was a fantastic result, and one I’m sure the boys will remember, being on the day we paid tribute to the tragic passing of Philip Hughes.

TennisPrimary A tennis concluded for 2014 with a hard fought derby between our two teams, Federer and Nadal. With two of Nadal’s top three unable to play, management decided to send Seb Riechelt across to Nadal. This may have tipped the scales too far in favour of Nadal, as they emerged victorious 12 sets to 6. All played well, but with special mention to an outstanding game at the top of the list between Jayden Grant and Nick Brown.

Much thanks go to Vicki and Anthony Faulkner, managers of Federer, and David Tonkin, manager of Nadal, for their great work in 2014. Both sets of parents have been multiple year supporters of tennis at SHCMS, the Faulkners for two and David for four years.

Badminton22 NovemberYear 8SHCMS (3) lost to St Michaels (9)It was great to play St Michael’s who were worthy opponents. As we arrived St Michael’s were starting to set-up the courts and I was proud to see our boys pitch in and help, well done boys! We were very pleased to welcome Jordan Blanch to the team and Mark, who was from St Michael’s and filled-in for us as we were one man short. The competition was fierce, it was fantastic to see our boys working up a sweat, and the sportsmanship between the two teams was great. All doubles were close with only a couple of points between the two teams in each set and the boys welcomed and enjoyed the challenging game they faced. Sam Sanderson won his singles and had the opposition running all around the court, while Mitchell O’Leary was determined to make his opponent work hard for his points during his 3 set game. Liam Johnson worked the court well, placing the shuttlecock at the back of the court or making it go just over the net, and Isaac Fernandez had great vision in knowing where to place the shuttlecock and won his singles game easily. Tatenda Zembe read the shuttlecock well and Jalen North played some strong forearm shots. Jordan Blanch played a great doubles and singles and we appreciate his commitment to the team. What a wonderful way to finish our badminton season. On

behalf of the boys and the parents of this team, we thank Mr Stewart whose leadership and guidance was amazing. Many thanks and all the best to the boys in the future, Rita O’Leary.

22 NovemberYear 9SHCMS (6) defeated Glenunga (7)Last game of the season for the Year 9 team. Once again the power of Matt Olsen’s game was outstanding, winning many points with his smash and placement. Luke Wormals’d reflexes at the net was brilliant. Milano Vizzari started to move his opponent around the court with different shots. Liam Byrne has developed an incredible smash and overhead clear, which his opponent had some problems with. Jake Vigilante has had a brilliant season. He moves his opponent around the court from side to side and back to front to win many rallies and games this year. As we were short a player Dominic Vizzari (brother of Milano who will join the College in Year 6 next year) played and won his doubles match with Jake Vigilante and was unlucky to lost his singles match going down in three. Outstanding played. Thank you for all the players and parents this year. A great year.
