thPeriyar University was established at Salem on 17 September 1997 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The University has taken rapid strides and is emerging as one of the leading Universities. The vision of the University is to impart knowledge to the society through formal and informal modes and to contribute to nation building. Periyar University is reaccredited with 'A' grade by the NAAC with a CGPA of 3.15 in a four point scale. At present, the University has five Science schools and three Arts schools comprising 25 Departments which offer 27 P.G programmes and 26 research programmes. In addition, the University offers 35 diploma, 16 P.G. diploma, 8 certificate and 15 professional programmes. Besides the departments, the University has established exclusive centres for Biodiversity and Forest Studies, Geoinformatics and Planetary Science, Instrumentation and Maintenance Facility, Nanoscience, Tamil Computing, Women and Vivekanandha Studies. Currently, 92 colleges are affiliated to Periyar University from the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri which caters to the needs of students from rural areas and downtrodden sections of society. More than 1.5 lakh students have enrolled for various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered by Periyar University and their affiliated colleges.
Periyar University has taken stock of the situation based on which it has stipulated its long term objectives. The IQAC of the University has a major role to play in realizing the objectives. One of the important functions of IQAC is to develop pragmatic and achievable quality benchmarks for each of the academic and administrative activities. It constantly works towards realizing the goals of quality enhancement in teaching, research and extension, and their sustenance by adopting innovative teaching strategies to promote the interests of stake holders in higher education in the University and its affiliated colleges. It also motivates the students and teachers to gain research knowledge and skills comparable at International standards. IQAC plays a major role in clustering the Departments into Schools to enrich the quality of Arts, Science and Humanities leading to inter-disciplinary research.
The current workshop is arranged to vitalize the need of change in curriculum development to promote higher education in India. We strongly believe that the curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities of our stake holder are the key factor to determine the ability and enthusiasm of our stake holders. In addition, the impact of curricular aspects will explore the standard of the respective institution. Hence we arranged this workshop to get an idea from the eminent speakers and educationists to make needful-changes by variety of activities in the order of the creation of planned curriculum like syllabi, pedagogy, instruction, and delivery methods for guiding student learning. This workshop will mainly emphasize the roles of assessment in operating and experiencing the curriculum, importance of continuous assessment for enhancement of student learning, and the roles of feedback and comments for curriculum practice and learning enhancement.
