Catalog Description
Brief Course Description
This is the second level of Nihao series. It follows Nihao One and aims to teach students more advanced skills
in Chinese over a wider range of situations. Nihao Two also reinforces the language and cultural elements
introduced in Nihao One. The objectives are to enable students to use Chinese in the classroom, playground,
local community and countries where the language is spoken.

Course Purpose
What is the purpose of this course? Please provide a brief description of the goals and expected outcomes. Do not simply

Course Goals
1. Provide students a solid foundation in Chinese Language for further study, work, business and leisure.
2. Develop the ability to communicate accurately and effectively in listening, speech and writing within a
range of genuine contexts.
3. Develop an understanding of and response to language demands in and out of the classroom setting.
4. Offer insights into the Chinese cultures while effectivly integrating comprehension and useful skills.
5. Provide an opportunity to enjoy the creative and intellectual stimulation in the study of foreign language.
Major Student Outcomes
Students who complete Chinese 3 & 4 will have demonstrated effective communication at the appropriate
level through listening, speaking and writing, reading with understanding in the following areas:.
1. Interpersonal communication: direct oral and written communication between individuals.
2. Interpretive communication: Receptive communication of oral or written messages.
3. Presentational communication: Productive communication using oral or written language.
4. Cultural knowledge: (a) Knowledge of cultureal perspectives governing interactions between individuals of
ages, statuses, backgrounds. (b) Knowledge of how cultural perspectives are embedded in products (literary
artistic). (c) Knowledge of cultural perspectives governing interactions between a speaker and his/her audience
and a writer and his/her reader.

Course Requirements
Key Assignments
Include all major assignments that students will be required to complete each quarter. How do assignments incorporate

First Quarter Key Assignments
Poster: A poster with information about student's personal and family information, their relationships,
occupations, like and dislike, based on the language functions and sentence patterns that students have
learned from Chinese 1 & 2.
Plus 3-5 minutes in class presentation.
Second Quarter Key Assignments
Cultural Participation and Research (C.P.R.) Activities (Topics can include music, food, travel, shopping, T.V.,
movie, magazine, art, sports, history, celebrity, important figure, etc.) Students will need to prepare:
1) A 3 - 4 page typed write up in English about their topic (include who, what, when, where, why, and how).
2) Their impressions, opinions and what they learned from this C.P.R. activity.
3) A poster written in Chinese only for this C.P.R. activity.
4) A 6 to 8 minutes in class presentation (50% of presentation has to be in Chinese.)
Third Quarter Key Assignments
Mini-role Play: (1) pairs present a 3 - 5 minute memorized skit based on the textbook content information.
or (2) student can sing a song or recite a poem in Chinese.
Fourth Quarter Key Assignments
(1) With a partner or group, perform a mini-drama in Chinese for 15 minutes or (2) Keep a journal of a movie
or video, a "trip", and "experience" to Chinese Cultural activities… describe in writing or captioned pictures
your experiences in Chinese.
Writing
Courses should require recurrent practice in writing structured, analytical papers. Students must demonstrate
understanding of the core and/or theme based content through written response to texts of varying lengths.
