How to decide what to cover in your yearbook.

Survey your readers!• Have them evaluate last year’s book to uncover

their likes & dislikes• Discover reader interests in & outside of school• Ask what they want & need to see in this year’s

book to be satisfied customers• Encourage them to contribute ideas as well as

content (quotes, image share w/RePlayIt, etc.)

Get out there!

• Become a Yearbook Ambassador and get to know the students in your school.–Make sure your assigned list of students appears in

the book three times, knows how to buy a book, and knows they have an insider on the staff who is committed to representing them in the yearbook!

Get out there!

Embrace your inner STALKER!• Get used to people noticing you noticing them!• Make yearbook staff t-shirts or buttons and wear

them proudly.• Linger where things are happening; be in the right

place at the right time.• Carry your camera with you everywhere you go, and

always have a small notepad to jot down names, quotes, or ideas for coverage.

REMEMBER: If students and staff see you around all the time, it won’t be weird anymore (for them OR for you!)

Planning your coverage

Plan the number of section pages (sports, student life, academics, etc.) you will need in order to cover

ALL students.

•Coverage “formula”–Add up the numbers of theme (opening/closing

etc.), advertising and index pages and subtract this total from the total number of pages in your book; this equals your “working number” of pages – this is how many pages within which you must capture the entire student body!

Curriculum ~

Coverage

Page 7: Curriculum ~ Coverage Everything you need to know to represent every student in your book!

Planning, cont.

Use the “working number” of pages and divide it into the following sections:

Student Life – 25%People (Portraits) – 25%Sports – 15%Organizations/Clubs – 15%Academics – 15%

(That leaves 5% to be used where needed)

Coverage

Page 8: Curriculum ~ Coverage Everything you need to know to represent every student in your book!

Planning, cont.

• Reminder: Portraits or “mug shots” in the People section only show the “person” – the rest of your coverage should show the “personality” of the student body.

• What do they like best about school?

• Who do they hang out with?

• What is their personal style? Fashion, Media, etc.

• What activities are they involved with inside and outside of school?

• Which activities define their experience? (Work, dating, sports, AP classes, culture, family, unique skills, etc.)

Inclusive CoverageInclusive Coverage ~

Design for Inclusive Coverage; plan spreads, stories and content modules in each section which feature different social groups and personalities.

• Devote pages to school sports, rallies, popular classes and clubs, as well as student jobs, unique traditions, summer travel, artists, extreme sports, fashion, etc.•Brainstorm how to include the voices and images of students who are not directly involved in the activity: -“Voices from the Crowd” interview people who only watched the game, not just the players and coaches. -“Stay-cations” tell the less glamorous stories of spring break, not just the fancy trips to Mexico, etc.

Add a photo strip to increase coverage

Inclusive Coverage ~ Add more photos

Add coverage to any spread with photo strips at the top or bottom of the page. Photo strips may include room for captions, simple id’s or candids (no caption).

Page 12: Curriculum ~ Coverage Everything you need to know to represent every student in your book!

Photo Strip Example

Photo strips may be incorporated into any design aesthetic; they can run vertically or horizontally, use different size and shape photo boxes, use cut-out background shots, or be placed on color bars, to name a few options.

Photo Strips: Just Do It!Inclusive Coverage ~ Add more photos

A good example of a photo strip that runs in the middle of the spread (instead of bottom or top) and provides extra visual interest by using varying sizes of pics.

Creative Photo StripsInclusive Coverage ~ Add more photos

Photo strips needn’t be blocky or boring, as the one above proves using circular pics and a ribbon graphic.

Cut-Out backgrounds (COB’s) may allow room for more students in a photo strip.

Folio FacesInclusive Coverage ~ Add more photos

Folio’s that state the page number, book section and spread title should run consistently throughout your book; since they are on every page, adding mini-pics (with or without id captions) is a great way to add coverage to each spread.

Page 16: Curriculum ~ Coverage Everything you need to know to represent every student in your book!

“Folio faces” are a good way to incorporate more pics on each page

Specialty Coverage provides a great place to feature students who are less

involved in traditional school activities.

Inclusive Coverage ~ Add more photos

Specialty coverage could be included

under Student Life in a traditional

yearbook organization, as a

part of the season in which the special

event took place for a chronologically

organized book, as a separate content

mod in a modular design, or as a

creative side bar built into your

portraits section or index.

Division pages may provide extra space for Specialty Coverage

Inclusive Coverage ~ Specialty Coverage

This spring divider is the perfect place for a profile on the special

skill of a student who might be underrepresented in the rest of the book. People Profiles are a great way to get to know your

quieter students.

small photo boxes.

The pics on the graph add interest to the reader by showing WHO are some of the faces behind the stats, and increase coverage by allowing more students to be pictured in the book.
