10. BUSINESS
A. Discussion: New Prefix ENGX (English Accelerated) – Denise Rempel Denise Rempel stated that one concern was that ENGX would be separated from the
ENGL courses, when in reality they would be right after each other. Denise went on to state that they would like to see a note in the catalog/schedule of courses stating the additional READ courses in a different section.
Vince Piro stated he talked to Teresa Gudgel about revising the catalog and schedule of courses to be more user friendly for students.
Denise Rempel stated that ENGL-82 is the last basic skills number for the ENGL prefix. Denise also stated they would like the course numbered 85, since it is at the same level as the current ENGL-85.
Valerie Albano is concerned that this will be required of all disciplines requesting accelerated courses.
Luis Flores stated that the ENGX could pose problems with the data management system and with how courses are reported to the Chancellor’s Office.
Denise Rempel requested that this be put up for action at the next Curriculum Committee meeting.
B. Update: Course Substitutions and Prerequisite Challenge Form Taskforce – Julie
Clark Julie Clark gave a brief overview of the last meeting. Items discussed included:
Julie Clark and Diane Spork will be working on creating a policy and procedure to bring to the taskforce.
Requiring programs to come through the curriculum committee for regular review like courses do.
Creating an appeal process for course substitutions. Julie Kehoe and Angela Tos are working on updating the current policy,
procedure, and form. Diana Romero is not going to process forms that have not been submitted
through the Admission and Records office prior to obtaining signatures. Next meeting has not been scheduled.
C. Update: Associate Degree Breadth Requirements and CILC Taskforce – Julie Clark
Julie Clark gave a brief overview of the last meeting. Items discussed included: Looked at Title 5 section 55063 with regard to the minimum requirements for General Education.
Curriculum Committee Minutes 03-03-16 (Unapproved)
Discussed reducing Social and Behavioral Science section to 3-units and making it one list.
Discussed making Area E one section, but leaving it at 5-units Discussed eliminating the Computer and Information Literacy requirement or
possible revising it, so that it is not so complicated. Next meeting is Monday March 21st 1:00-2:00pm in Science 227.
D. Discussion: Curriculum Timeline – Brian Ellison and Julie Clark
Julie Clark stated that Brian Ellison has asked to discuss with the Curriculum Committee about changing the deadline for when curriculum is due and possibly having multiple deadlines throughout the year. Julie also stated that there is discussion about having a mid-year catalog addendum to give students opportunities that were not available when the catalog went to print, e.g. the A.A.-T. in Sociology.
Dee Near stated that back in John Spevak’s and Ann Anderson’s days the curriculum committee had rolling deadlines. As items came forward they decided when these changes could go into effect.
Greg Soto stated this is the second time this is on the agenda and Brian Ellison is not in attendance. Greg stated the faculty would really like to discuss this with Brian Ellison.
