Texts we will use: The Scarab’s Secret by Nick Would
Stunning start: The children receive are transported back to
November 1922 to join Howard Carter excavate
the mysteries of the Ancient Egypt and
Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Marvellous middle: The children will enjoy a day making all things
Egyptian, from making amulets, creating
cartouches to Egyptian necklaces.
Fabulous finish: The children will visit the British Museum in
London.
Every two weeks, your child will
choose a new activity from the
homework grid.
Please continue to support your
child with their spellings and
try to listen to them read at
home at least 2 times a week.
Maths Children will continue and extend
their knowledge and understanding of:
Counting, partitioning, using data,
understanding shape and measuring.
Year 6 will also be focusing on
preparing for the SATs by practicing
exam questions.
Teachers will also provide different
learning styles, including outdoor
learning and ICT.
Literacy The children will investigate non-
fiction and fiction texts - based on
significant and inspiring characters
from stories and in real life from
Ancient Egypt. Children will write
stories using their new found
knowledge and vocabulary acquired
through this term’s topic. They will
also write their own creative story
inspired by Nick Wood’s The Scarab Beetle.
Science Children will undertake various
investigations linked to the term’s
topic. The children will learn about
light and how it travels and changes
what we see. They will also learn
about evolution and how animals and
humans share features through
inheritance and the changes to their
bodies. The children will also
experiment further with materials,
exploring changes of state and
forming new materials.
PHSE Through circle time and lessons, the
children will be learning about staying
safe and improving with Year 6 also
looking at managing changes in their
lives and starting to look at being
financially responsible. Our values this term are:
perseverance and appreciation.
DT This term, the focus will be on food
technology. Children will look at
making bread and how this forms part
of a healthy diet. The children will
learn about the importance of
hygienic food preparation and how to
use kitchen tools safely.
Music Children will continue to learn to play
the recorder and untuned
instruments. They will compare and
contrast instruments of today with
the traditional instruments of Egypt;
They will try and recreate some of
these sounds using percussion and
learn and play an Egyptian sounding
scale – ABCDEFG#A – using
chromatic glockenspiels.
French Children will initially revise the
French they learnt last term to
include greetings, family, colours,
days, months and weather.
They will then develop their
vocabulary to name different food
and drink and practice ordering food
in French.
Art Inspired by this term’s topic, the
children will develop their skills of
sketching by using a range of drawing
media. They will use collage to create
Ancient Egyptian wall art and also use
paint to create an Egyptian portrait.
The children will also learn about
hieroglyphics and create their own
cartouche.
Geography
Children will extend their
geographical vocabulary by looking at
the geographical and physical
features of Egypt. They will use
atlases, maps and globes in a range of
scales to locate different places.
They will learn about Ancient Egypt’s
climate and seasons and how this
affects what kind of food was grown.
ICT
Children will look at networks and how
on-line services work, how they are
set up and used. They will continue to
use the internet to support cross
curricula links – using a range of
software packages to present their
work to others. The children will
develop their programming skills to
plan, predict and test instructions to
make basic puzzles using Scratch.
PE
The focus this term for all children
will be on Kwik Cricket and athletics.
In Kwik Cricket children will develop
their throwing, catching and fielding
skills, whilst in athletics, children will
develop their skills in running, jumping
and throwing, using their bodies and a
variety of equipment with greater
control and coordination.
RE Children will continue to develop their
understanding of different beliefs by
looking at the values and teaching of
Christians and Humanists. They will
develop their philosophical thinking by
discussing how beliefs about right and
wrong affect people’s behavior and
their actions as well as looking at
stories that involve moral dilemmas.
