ACS Recognizes Cancer Center Team Excellence

SH Cancer Center was recently recognized by the American Cancer Society’s East Central Division’s Health Systems Excellence Award.

This award recognizes SH for going above and beyond to embrace the full scope of our relationship with the American Cancer Society (ACS), and to demonstrate exemplary support in advancing the fight against cancer. Susquehanna Health has contributed as a leading sponsor to six Relay for Life events within the region, as well as will sponsor these upcoming events, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Central PA in Montoursville and the Destiny Ball in Williamsport. In addition to sponsorships, Susquehanna Health has also referred 364 cancer patients to the ACS for assistance in their cancer journey, including 311 newly diagnosed with cancer.

“Being recognized as a stand-out from dozens of submissions and other organizations acknowledges the efforts of everyone at our health system involved with cancer care,” said Michelle Gaida, Executive Director of SH Cancer Services. “Our patients know we are an essential partner with them in the fight against cancer and this award highlights the level of care that we are providing to the region.”

The Health Systems Excellence Award is presented by the American Cancer Society to a select number of health systems each year. Organizations are voted upon by an ACS Board of Directors for their region (Pennsylvania and Ohio).

Congratulations, Cancer Center team members!

SH and Chamber Host Employer Roundtable

Susquehanna Health Occupational Health and the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce recently invited local employers to a Bi-Annual Central Pennsylvania Employer Roundtable at Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

The purpose of the event was to bring together Susquehanna Health and local employers for

a recurring educational event and discussion. The goal is to better integrate the needs of employers in northcentral Pennsylvania with SH. This forum is exclusive to larger employers and will attempt to address issues that are unique to successful enterprises in our market. Due to the benefits of this event, attendance for the roundtable has doubled to over 60 employers.

During the event Matthew McLaughlin, Executive Director of Musculoskeletal Services, Dr. Camille Hinojosa, MPH, MRO, Occupational Heath Medical Director, and Chandra Dewald, MRO-A, WorkCenter Employer Outreach Liaison, spoke about various topics, including fit-for-duty exams and a medical/legal update regarding new legislation affecting the workplace.

“The roundtable continues to be a valuable collaboration between local employers and the healthcare community,” commented McLaughlin. “It is a venue where we can share our challenges and opportunities, along with practical solutions that have been proven effective for addressing workforce health across our region.”

Letter to Service PartnersDear friends and colleagues,

As we complete this year’s transition from summer to fall, we are reminded the future of healthcare in Pennsylvania is being dramatically impacted by an increase of patients over the age of 65, skyrocketing costs of medications and medical devices, physician shortages, and cost competition. Yet our future success continues to rely on our ability to accomplish the triple aim of simultaneously improving quality, reducing cost and providing great healthcare experiences for our patients, despite the challenges we face. Our Board of Directors firmly believes healthcare mergers and consolidations in Pennsylvania will continue until only a few major systems remain. And we also firmly believe it is better to control our own destiny than to be controlled by the destiny of others.

Therefore, after nearly three years of extensive research, analysis and planning our Board of Directors, including input and advice from key senior members of our medical staff, Board Chair Ann Pepperman and I executed an agreement to affiliate Susquehanna Health with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

In UPMC, we have a partner that brings:

• The second largest medical school in Pennsylvania, and the third largest residency and fellowship training enterprise in the nation; • A $14 billion per year, 60,000-employee company with excellent economies of scale across a wide variety of supplier goods and services;• A fully owned, top-ranked health plan; and,• A culture of caring, collaboration and community service very similar to our own.

In Susquehanna Health, UPMC has a partner that brings:

• Outstanding clinical quality and a very successful patient safety track record; • A fully integrated continuum of patient services provided in excellent facilities; • Knowledge of how to deliver services to rural markets; and,• A culture of patient hospitality, CAREing and collaboration.

This agreement with UPMC is the first of several upcoming milestones we will mark along our journey together. Many other exciting developments designed to improve the health and wellness of our regional communities are also under development. But please remember – regardless of what else our future holds, our number one priority must always be the best CARE for our patients, no matter what.

Thank you all for all you do, have done and will continue to do in the months and years ahead.

Sincerely,

Steven P. Johnson President & CEO

Survey Available for VeteransIn preparation for Veterans Day, Human Resources is offering service partners who have served or are serving in the armed forces an opportunity to complete a short survey identifying their service record.

The survey is only two questions long, and will help SH to properly acknowledge our service partners that are military veterans. The survey can be found on insideSH.

Susquehanna Health appreciates the men and women of our armed forces, both present and past.

Education on Advance Directives Sept. 27 & 28When most people hear the words, “advance directive,” they often assume death is near, and panic about why it is being broached with them before a routine procedure, or brush it off as unimportant when they are at a younger age.

In reality, advance directives are appropriate for all ages and are not limited to end-of-life care. They are simply a record of your pre-determined choices regarding your medical care. They ensure your wishes are carried out should you ever be incapacitated and unable to direct your care.

It is best to plan ahead and make these types of thought-provoking decisions when you are in a clear, healthy and relaxed state of mind, instead of during an emergency.

Find out exactly what advance directives are, how to complete one, how they’re used and why they’re important at a free outreach program offered by Cynthia Compton, MSW, on September 27 from 6—7 pm and September 28 from 10—11 am in SSMH’s Pine Grove Conference Room.

For more information, contact Cynthia at (570) 723-0485 or [email protected].
