Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) encouraged members and friends to wear pink on Oct. 15 in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many of the members also wore gold ribbons to signify childhood cancer as well.

“This is a great way to show support for those affected by breast cancer and other cancers,” said WiSE Activity Coordinator Tonia Smith. “WiSE hopes that the group picture in front of the Dorothy will get larger each year. On behalf of WiSE, I would like to thank all who participated this year!”

On Aug. 14, a luncheon was held to celebrate the 12th anniversary of X33 apprentice rotations with Environmental Engineering. During the event, apprentices spoke of their appreciation concerning the regulatory responsibilities of paint waste management and benefits the rotation has provided for their careers.

Danny Hunley, vice president of Operations, attended the luncheon and stated the importance of the apprentice program at Newport News Shipbuilding and how the apprentices are an integral part of the current and future leadership of the company.

In addition, Bennie Steele, director

QUALITY MONTH

As part of our focus on Quality this month, we are highlighting the Continuous Improvement and Self Assessment Program (CISAP) this week. CISAP is an ongoing process that provides Newport News Shipbuilding a method for establishing and maintaining a proactive self-evaluation and improvement strategy. The primary objective of the CISAP program is to prevent potentially significant problems by addressing emerging issues. Additionally, once risks are identified causes are determined and corrective actions are implemented.

“It’s important that we understand the health of our operations, products, and services and where there are issues that need to be proactively addressed,” said Mike O’Donnell, director of Process Excellence. “The majority of our effort should be out in front actively managing rather than reacting.”

As a reminder, handicap parking at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is designed for employees with temporary and/or permanent physical

restrictions. Vehicles parked in a handicap designated space at NNS must have a handicap issued license plate or a valid handicap hanging tag issued in the employee’s name. Unauthorized personnel parking in handicap spaces is a violation and vehicles without the proper handicap designator will be towed.

Respect the Spaces, Don’t Abuse the Use

In September, several Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineer (SNAME) apprentices traveled to Long Island, NY to visit Webb Institute. Don Rickerson, a current senior at Webb Institute and a 2008 Apprentice School graduate, hosted the group for the weekend. Highlights of the trip included a campus tour, lecture on ship design, and a hands-on tow tank lab exercise.

“The event was a great educational and social experience for us,” said Apprentice Gary Garner. “I hope a strong relationship with The Apprentice School and Webb Institute continues to grow. I think both institutions can learn a lot from each other.”

In August, Ray Bagley, director of Manufacturing, represented Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) at the 2012 Congressional Black Caucus Policy Conference in Tunica, Mississippi. During the three-day conference, Bagley had the opportunity to meet with members of Congress and discuss issues of importance to America’s growth and security.

“In addition to speaking with many congressmen from around the country, I was also able to participate in several legislative seminars regarding issues affecting our country and community,”

said Bagley. “The entire conference was certainly eye-opening and extremely educational. I hope NNS continues sponsorship of this event again in the years to come.”

HealthWaves is offering Newport News Shipbuilding employees a FREE flu shot and health screening as part of the annual “Take An Hour for Wellness” Program. The screening provides shipbuilders with a snapshot of their current health and numbers for their blood pressure, sugar, body composition and cholesterol. “Company and employee contributions are extremely important in helping our community meet its health and human services needs,” said Bill Ermatinger, vice president and Chief Human Resources Officer, Huntington Ingalls Industries, and the 2012 United Way Campaign Chairman. “I encourage all shipbuilders to actively participate in this year’s campaign.”
