from the Head of School

I want to thank you for your support of George Stevens Academy, a school I am coming to know and love, and for which I see a remarkable future. Let me tell you a few stories that illustrate the sort of place your support helps create.

A place that nurtures inquisitive minds

On nice days, a number of senior girls have lunch on the front steps of the Academy House, right outside my office. One of them is interested in applying Early Decision to my alma mater, Dartmouth College, and she wanted to talk with me about it. I was impressed with her focus, self-awareness, and openness to what I had to say. She had good questions prepared, and engaged me in real conversation. She was not looking for confirmation of something she had already decided; she had a genuine interest and curiosity. Whatever her college choice ends up being, she has been well trained as a thinker here.

A place to explore possibilities

One of the noteworthy programs at GSA is the Independent Study and Internship Program. It allows students time to pursue an interest in depth. We are just getting started this year—students are thinking of what they want to do, seeking advisors and off campus mentors, and crafting their proposals. One of our teachers sent me an email the other day about the proposal of a girl who had gone on a trip with her to Belize last year. The young lady wants to return there, to help the Rotary Club donate wheelchairs to hospitals, and learn about needs in developing countries.

A place with top academics for all learners

I was going through the checkout line at TradeWinds, and saw two of our residential students also going through the line. (We have 43 boarding students from nine countries.) I gave them a ride back to the dorm, and on the way, I asked which was their favorite class. One answered, “Gym!” with a big smile. (Students are the same, no matter their nationality and heritage!) The other said his science class, chemistry. He liked the experiments and how they were able to see the concepts they were learning applied in the real world.

In the first two weeks of September, I had occasion to speak with three boys who are participating in a program called the Eastern Maine Skippers Program, which is designed to give students experience with various aspects of the maritime industry, including seamanship. I asked them about a recent class spent sailing a large schooner from Brooklin into Blue Hill Harbor. “It was awesome! I mean, it was raining and wet and choppy, but we had a great time!”

The other day I was in conversation with a parent whose son is in our Special Education program. We have two excellent teachers, and are putting the finishing touches on a renovated space for their classes. He said, “My son is doing so well. He is actually asking his teacher for help! He never would do that before!”

A place where students are happy and feel they belong

About two weeks after school began, a dad came to see me to ask for advice on how to get his son to read more. He began speaking, then stopped, literally in mid-sentence, and looked at me. “You have an amazing student body,” he said. “Your students are friendly, they look you in the eye, and as I walked on campus, several asked me if I needed help getting to your office.” He paused, and then said, “That would not have happened at my high school.”

I was talking with our Student Council president last week about her experience over her four years at GSA. She feels ready to be a successful student in college, but academic preparation alone is not the only strength of our school: the reason GSA is a better place to go to school than other high schools, she thinks, is because our community’s cohesiveness is unmatched.

This is the school you have chosen to support: A school where students know they can be themselves, a school where students are happy, a school where students are engaged in their work. It is a school that provides an excellent education for all types of learners, from all sorts of backgrounds, and with all manner of aspirations. George Stevens Academy is a school where all students are welcome as they are, are challenged to become what they can become, and are supported on that journey. And at GSA, all of them become a single, cohesive, and joyous community.

You enable us to be this school. Thank you.

From Marion Morris, President of the Board of TrusteesThis year was momentous in two ways especially: We welcomed Tim Seeley as our new Head of School, and we acquired a building on Tenney Hill to become a new dorm. Both changes reflect hours of careful and thoughtful work by two trustee-led committees, the Search Committee and the Residential Committee. From the start, Tim Seeley has been working to ensure that students and faculty are supported as fully as possible, reinstating the position of Academic Dean, appointing a Director of Student Conduct and expanding Special Education services. As well, GSA now has a full-time nurse and a part-time counselor.Appointing a Dean of Curriculum and Instruction, expanding Special Education, and increasing support of health care for students were all goals of the 2013 Strategic Plan. Additional housing to improve the residential experience and address declining opportunities in homestays were also items on our extended strategic list.We are fortunate to have been able to purchase a property that so well addresses our current boarding needs and provides space for future facilities needs. Once remodeling of the building is complete, it will provide a suitable home for our residential population and dorm parents, as well as indoor recreation areas for all GSA students. Thanks to the assistance of architect and past parent Bruce Stahnke, we look forward to opening the new dorm by August 2016.Diversification of our Residential Program is important to both its excellence and sustainability. This year we have a total enrollment of 326 students —283 day students and 43 international boarding students from 9 different countries—33

from China, 1 from Taiwan, 2 from Vietnam, 2 from Turkey, 1 from Russia, 1 from South Korea, 1 from Thailand, 1 from Italy, and 1 from Jamaica. We have undertaken a thorough assessment of our facilities in relation to GSA’s Strategic Plan goals with the aim of producing a campus master plan. The plan will be driven by program needs identified in the Strategic Plan, as well as those that have evolved in the few years since its completion. We continue to dedicate significant time and resources to addressing deferred maintenance, in ways that are environmentally sound and sustainable.A donation to the annual fund i s a monetary vote of confidence in GSA’s development as an institution, deepening academic curriculum as well as widening educational offerings, and unerring commitment to its students. George Stevens is a happy, hardworking school, and the annual fund is critical to ensuring its ongoing success. The annual fund belongs to all of us—students, faculty, administration, parents, alumni, and friends. There are also numerous people who mentor and aid students, who lend their artistic or academic gifts, who share the richness of their lives—all of which makes GSA an extraordinary place for students and adults alike. We appreciate the generosity of these contributions, offered in hundreds of ways, which further strengthen our school and highlight an engaged community at its very best. Truly, George Stevens Academy could not continue to offer such a diverse academic and extracurricular program to so many students without the wide-ranging support that we receive. We are very grateful and we thank you.

Welcoming Two New Trustees — from Melissa Mattes for the Committee on Trustees Katrina Parson

After many years living in Connecticut where she raised her three children, Katrina and her husband, Frank, arrived in Maine in 1990 to live in their retirement house in Brooklin. Because Katrina had a professional career in human services, she quickly became involved in area organizations. Over the past 25 years she has served on the following boards: Downeast Horizons, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and the Eastern Maine Healthcare System, the Bay School, The Grand, Blue Hill Heritage Trust, and, of course, GSA, where she served on the board several years ago. Katrina enjoys singing in the Bagaduce Chorale, hiking, and playing tennis. She looks forward to returning to GSA’s board to continue the work of this critical institution.

Jeffrey AllenJeffrey Smith Allen’s family has lived on the Blue Hill Peninsula for six generations. Jeff welcomes the opportunity to continue a long history of support for GSA, where his father, Kermit Allen, served on the Board of Trustees for almost 30 years. After graduating from GSA in 1979, Jeff joined the Navy and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette University. After extensive traveling, Jeff returned to Maine and lives in Blue Hill with his wife, Tina, and two teenage sons. He and his family have hosted GSA residential students over the past six years. Jeff is enjoying his current role as the owner/operator of Downeast Properties, Inc. and is an active member of the family business, G.M. Allen & Son. Jeff served on the board’s Finance Committee for the past year before joining the board.

As part of her work with Wild Seed Project, a Blue Hill and Portland-based non-profit focused on returning native plants and pollinator habitat to the Maine landscape, Samantha Haskell ’05 co-edited the group’s first annual publication, Wild Seed 2015. “The title of ‘Editor’ came with a steep learning curve,” shares Sam. “As those from small, community-based schools know, sometimes you need to call in favors from your friends and neighbors to get good work done, and luckily the GSA network is full of brilliant allies.”

Sam elaborates: “First, current parent Kathryn Dillon and alumni parent Lisa Looke were the genius minds in charge of Art and Design for the magazine. For the center spread featuring Pollinator Corridors, we needed a creative writer with a journalistic bent who would follow us into uncharted territories and luckily, Morgan Springer ’07, a recent graduate of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, was up for the job.

As Morgan compiled her photo-essay, we realized we needed specific shots of the High Line corridor in New York City and quickly called our friend, filmmaker Justine Conte ’05, who saved us by spending her Sunday on a High Line photo shoot in Chelsea.

When our crew trekked down to Portland for our cover photo shoot, home base was Étaín, the lingerie shop owned by Mackenzie Morris ’06. While out scouting shots, Kathryn and Lisa ran into Martin Conte ’11, as well as Mackenzie’s brother Dillon Morris ’09, who was out walking a dog belonging to Hilary Thibodeau ’06 and Arvid Brown ’06. (Seriously, has anyone gone to Portland lately and not run into someone from our Peninsula?) I digress, but you get the point—the GSA network is strong!

With guidance from our Board of Directors, which includes alumni parents Mary Whiting and Rick Larson, we had a beautiful finished publication by the beginning of June. Please check it out, and if you’d like to join the network of GSA alums making this all possible, be in touch!”

REUNION NEWS: Class of 1965

From Linda Gray Martin ’65

“If smiles and hugs are any indication, then the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1965 was a big success. Nineteen members of the class, three former teachers, and lots of spouses and guests gathered together at the Peninsula Metamorphic Arts and Learning Center in Blue Hill on September 25, 2015 for a chance to relive old memories and catch up on each other’s lives over the past fifty years.Bernard Perkins ’65 contributed one of the very first Mountain Echo books from the Class of 1915 to GSA. Lucretia Leach Milliken’s son, Gary, deejayed great sixties music and Jesse Leach’s son served up oysters from their oyster farm. The reunion committee put together a book of classmate profiles (contributed by each classmate) along with headlines and popular culture trivia from the sixties. If any class member missed out on getting a book, there are a few left. Contact Linda at [email protected]. Linda also has a few 8 x 10 color copies of the class reunion picture if you’d like one.”
