Kayak and Canoe to Great Food What do you get when you combine paddling and locally grown food: Happy friends and family? Check. A great extended date with your sweetheart? Ooh la la. The most memorable trips ever? Definitely! To experience this healthy combo on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, we have created two itineraries: Watery Scenes & Edible Greens focused in the Lake Champlain Islands, and Fresh Food & Fresh Air in Richford focused along the Missisquoi River around our Vermont Trail Town. Both itineraries are available online at our website’s Plan a Trip. The Lake Champlain Islands have 200 miles of shoreline to paddle. Watery Scenes & Edible Greens shares trips including opportunities for paddling to farmers’ markets, staying overnight at an island orchard, and catching a weekly free concert at a lakeside vineyard. The suggested trips also identify how you can add in the islands’ renowned cycling and unique fossil hunting at a 480-million year old coral reef. Along the 80-mile Missisquoi River, Fresh Food & Fresh Air in Richford offers paddling options combined with biking on a rail trail that follows the river bank, and hiking in the Green Mountains with vistas of the broad river valley. The local food options range from farm stand berry pies, to café maple custards, to farm tours where you can savor everything from sauerkraut to bright floral arrangements. NFCT anticipates that these itiner- aries will attract new visitors to northern Vermont. Both include lots of detail and description to help you figure out the logis- tics of where to paddle, where to stay and how to have an active and tasty experience.

Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends,

A blustery squall is sending little snowflakes flying in all directions outside my office window. Just past this flurry, the patchwork of snow and mud that is the fabric of a North Country spring spreads across fields and yards. The skis aren’t quite put away yet…but the boats aren’t quite out yet. It’s an in-between time that can leave you full of impatience one

moment and possibility the next.NFCT is humming with possibility, regardless of the weather outside. As you’ll

see in the pages of this newsletter, we are already ramping up for a busy season, both on and off the Trail. We’re excited about the range of work, from aquatic invasive species education to youth programming, and from Film Fests to stone staircase construction. This range reflects the expansiveness and possibility of our Trail itself.

As we grow and stretch, we are more grateful than ever to the many partners, volunteers, members, donors, and friends without whom we would never have gotten this far or been able to keep dreaming big. Thank you. Here’s to warm breezes for the season ahead.

Warmly,

Kate Williams, Executive Director

Thank You 2012 Donors

seasonal staff onboard

We are excited to have two Regional Field Coordinators work for NFCT this paddling season. Noah Pollock and Sam Brakeley will help train and manage

summer interns, and coordinate stewardship projects.

Noah was one of NFCT’s first interns in 2007 and, lucky for us, keeps returning every summer to supervise interns. During winter months, he has helped

establish many of our business partnerships in Northern Vermont. Noah is also active with the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail.

Sam Brakeley through paddled the NFCT in 2009 and was a summer intern in 2010. He helped us with trail projects last fall and we’re glad to have him in a more official capacity this year. Sam recently self-published Paddling the Northern Forest Canoe Trail: A Journey Through New England History which is available in NFCT’s online store.

Sign-up for Northern Forest Explorers

This summer, we have ten trips scheduled to take youth, ages 10–14, on the Trail near their communities. Participants go on a 5-day paddling trip led by an NFCT Youth Program intern and experienced local guides.

Kids learn paddling, camping and leadership skills, and about environmental and ecological relationships. For example, they learn to take water quality tests and then input their data into an online spreadsheet that tracks all Northern Forest Explorer water monitoring across the entire Trail and over time.

Trip space is limited. Cost is based on a sliding scale. For dates and details, visit www.NorthernForestExplorers.org. To register, contact Youth Program Director Roger Poor at (802) 496-2285 ext. 5 or [email protected].

Lennox Foundation Supports Youth Program

Our Northern Forest Explorers get a major boost this year from the Lennox Foundation. The organization donated $25,000 to go towards participant schol-arships and program administration. We thank the Lennox Foundation for making our trips affordable for families who live along the Trail.

Thank You Merrell & Outdoor Nation

Our Northern Forest Explorers Program also received $2,500 from The Pack Project which is funded by Merrell, maker of shoes and outdoor apparel, in collaboration with Outdoor Nation,

a national initiative that reconnects millennials to the outdoors. The grant will be used to provide scholarships to our program participants. We applaud Merrell and Outdoor Nation for collabo-rating to encourage active outdoor recreation.
