B19 Y orkton This Week | www.Y orktonThisWeek.com | Wednesday, December 24, 2014 HUSACK - William Husack was born March 11, 1923 in the Wroxton district to Nick and Mary Husack (nee Lesanko). He attended Loyal School to Grade 9. As a child the family moved many times, but were always close enough to attend the same school. In 1941, William rode a bicycle for 4 days from the Saltcoats district to Rennie, MB, where the bike wore out, then rode the rails by boxcar for the rest of the way to Grimsby, ON. In the 1940’s, Bill worked at many jobs around the country to help out his family back home on the farm. In Ontario, he worked at a basket factory, con- crete and construction, tobacco and dairy farms. In B.C. he worked at a gold mine in Braylorn and a dairy farm near Vancouver. In Manitoba, he worked at Canada Packers and Standard Motors in Winnipeg and salvaged steel from a shutdown mine in Great Falls. After the war, he worked at a lumber camp in Flin Flon and a nickel mine in Lynn Lake, MB. Bill enlisted into the Canadian Army during the Second World War. He was trained as a soldier and then as a mechanic- driver. He was stationed in Shilo, Hamilton, Port Arthur, Maple Creek, Dundurn and Regina. In 1952, he married Gloria Balabuk and they moved into their home on Main Street in Calder. In 1962, he built a new house on the same lot. In 1964 he built the Coffee Mug café and they op- erated it together until the 1970’s. Farming was a part of him for his whole life. He was very eager to embrace tractors after working with horses for many years. He was mechanically minded and keen to learn new farming techniques. He invented a pto powered grinder because there was no power on the farm and held Canadian and U.S. patents for the device. He was industrious and enjoyed the saying, “Good weather, work hard” . He worked for many years as the manager of the Calder Credit Union, of course farming at the same time. He even learned to repair watches along the way. As his health declined Bill went to live in Regina, closer to his son Glen & family. He passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre. He was 91 years of age. In Loving Memory of Jennifer Lynne Baran,

who left us on December 26, 2001.

Missing someone isn’t about how long it’s been since you’ve seen themOr the amount of time since you’ve talked.It’s about that very moment when you’re doing somethingAnd wishing they were right there to share it with you.When someone you love becomes a memory,That memory becomes a treasure, cherish each one.Loved you yesterday, love you still.Always have, always will.

ARTS-AND-CRAFTS CHARM

The gently curving lower edge of its two gables lends this two-sto-rey family home a touch of 19th-century Arts-and-Crafts charm. But inside, everything is up-to-date, with a layout that will delight the most discern-ing 21st-century family.

The covered entry, a bonus in inclement weather, leads into the foyer. A coat closet is on the left, with a two-piece powder room opposite. Also off the foyer is a den, perfectly situated for use as a home office,

since clients will not have to traipse through the house. The den’s clos-et means it can also serve as a guest room.

The great room, located at the back of the home, features a double-height ceiling and a built-in fireplace. Generous windows look onto a covered deck. The dining room, which also overlooks the back garden, features sliding doors that lead to the same deck, the perfect place for all-weather barbecuing.

The kitchen boasts a spacious walk-through pantry, as well as an island with a raised eat-

ing bar, ideal for casual snacks and meals. The room is open to both the dining and great room, so the cook can keep tabs on family activities.

The laundry room enjoys triple access—from the walk-through pantry, the foyer and the double garage. There’s enough room in the garage for a third car, a large wood-working project or an indoor play area, as well as a work-bench.

The second floor, reached via a U-shaped staircase, contains the master suite, with an extra-wide window sill that could double

as a cosy window seat. Beyond the large ensuite, which includes a soaker tub and a shower stall, is a roomy walk-in closet.

The second and third bedrooms jut out under dormers and share a convenient split bath. Bedroom No. 3 features built-in shelves, as well as an extra-wide window sill.

Outside, shingle sid-ing enhances the home’s curb appeal. Painted trim and pilasters on river-rock bases, partly mullioned windows and a double front door add to its rustic charm, as do the barn-style garage doors.

This home mea-sures 42 feet wide and 61 feet deep, for a total of 2,256 square feet. An unfinished basement is included in the plans.

Plans for design 7-3-934 are available for $746 (set of 5), $835 (set of 8) and $890 for a super set of 10. Also add $30.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $55.00 outside of B.C. Please add 12% H.S.T., 13% H.S.T. Or 5% G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges.

Our 44TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $13.50 (includes taxes, post-age and handling). Make all cheques and money orders payable to “Home Plan of the Week” and mail to:

Keep the holiday home safe

Mental health recommendations

Many residents are busy with various fes-tive tasks including dis-playing indoor and out-door decorations, setting up the annual Christmas tree, searching for exten-sion cords and power bars, replacing light bulbs, baking cookies and other holiday treats, plus purchasing and wrapping gifts.

To help keep homes safe for the holidays, CAA Insurance has offered the following safety tips:

Christmas Trees: Ensure artificial Christmas trees are “fire resistant” and ensure live trees are fresh and moist at all times. Set up live and artificial trees away from fireplaces, heaters, and other heat sources.

Lighting: Inspect holiday lights yearly for broken, frayed or loose connections and throw out damaged sets.

Turn off all holiday lights when you go to

bed or leave the house. Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into ground fault circuit interrupters.

Decorations: Keep decorations away from lights, candles, heaters, fireplaces, etc. Place can-dles in noncombustible containers.

Holiday Entertaining: Do not leave any cook-ing unattended. Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of chil-dren.

General: Have the chimney and furnace professionally cleaned and inspected. Ensure that smoke alarms are working.

If you plan to be away from home during the holidays, here are some helpful tips:

Suspend newspaper delivery and arrange for someone to pick up your mail or contact your mail service to hold your mail until your return.

Ensure all doors and

windows are locked.Use timers to turn

lights, and possibly the TV or radio, on/off duringthe day/night.

Turn off your water supply or have some-one enter the home andcheck on things daily to ensure the pipes are not frozen.

Ask a neighbour to shovel snow around yourdriveway and sidewalks.

Leave a generic mes-sage on your answering machine – never say thatyou are away, includingon any social media you may subscribe to.

Leave blinds or cur-tain in normal position– don’t close them com-pletely.

Close and lock the garage door. Keep yourvehicle locked, especial-ly if it has an electric gar-age door opener.

Make sure your home insurance doesn’t expirewhile you are away andthat it will provide cover-age for your belongings.

Dr. Fern Stockdale Winder, Commissioner of the Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan, has submitted her report to Health Minister Dustin Duncan, recommending improvements to how the province responds to people with mental health and addictions issues.

“This report is the culmination of exten-sive public consultations across the province with a particular emphasis on the voices of people with lived experience of mental health and addic-tions issues and their family members, service providers across the human service sectors, and concerned citizens,” Stockdale Winder said. “These collective voices were powerful in the call for change and this report reflects our pro-cess of careful listening and responding to this call for change.”

The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan outlines 16 recom-mendations that fall into seven categories:

capacity and support recovery in the commun-ity;

and early intervention;

family-centred and co-ordinated services;

-ities;

Nations and Métis Peoples;

increase awareness; and

and sustain the change.Minister Duncan

received and endorsed the commissioner’s report, emphasizing the government’s commit-ment to improving its response to people with mental health or addic-tions issues.

“I want to thank Dr. Stockdale Winder and the participants for all of their hard work in creat-ing this report,” Duncan said. “The recommen-dations in the Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan will guide our efforts to improve mental health and addic-tions services over the next 10 years.”

In 2013, Minister Duncan appointed Dr. Stockdale Winder as commissioner to develop a 10-year inter-minister-ial action plan to address the complex and often connected issues of men-tal health and addictions. Lead by the Ministry of

Health, partner min-istries include SocialServices, Education, Justice and Corrections and Policing.

Public consultationsbegan in August 2013 andconcluded in April 2014.Dr. Stockdale Winderand her team travelledthe province learningfrom clients and stake-holders in more than 150meetings, and heard frommore than 4,000 individ-uals through a variety ofways, including an online questionnaire.

“The response to the consultation process isa reminder of just howimportant this work is to Saskatchewan families,”Duncan said. “We are already making improve-ments across the system,and the recommenda-tions in this plan affirm that direction.”

Since 2007, fundingfor mental health servi-ces has increased 34 per cent.
