3 I CURRENT December 2013 AFC • What is your desire? We’ve got it!
Time really does fly when you are having fun. I can say that I had a great time this year traveling
around the state and meeting with all the wonderful members of this Association. Our biggest challenge has always been spreading the word of what the AFC is about. We have to battle the myths that some people have because they do not know the real story. Let’s continue to do the work of talking to the new employees of our colleges and explaining to them what we are about. Yes, in the near future we will meet that goal of being 10,000 strong. The membership trend is on its way up again and we are over 8,100 and climbing thanks to a great membership conference followed by your hard work. I want to thank Co-Chairs Stephanie Campbell and Tom Mason and the Membership Development team for their great work. We had a very good legislative year and we were able to push back some propositions to make changes to the FRS again. We assisted in the effort to minimize the impact of reform to developmental education. We completed our second class for CCP and now all of our CCP
courses are online. We now have a partnership with the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida for program delivery and possible credits from CCP. AFC has a new App for both the iPhone and Android systems. The Burst the Balloon campaign continues until we reach our goal of paying off the building. Convention 2013 was special. We had what I call a traditional convention that was filled with over 50 professional development sessions, a room full of great vendors, a very successful silent auction, a beautiful Gala, a great service project, and a closing brunch. Over the three wonderful days in Orlando, we conducted some very important business that included changing the name and responsibilities of the Retiree Commission to the Retirees of AFC. If you have never attended a Convention, you missed a very special event that only happens once a year. You missed a lot by not attending; hopefully, you can attend next year. Our theme for the convention was “Pathways, Pipelines, and Partnership” which tells the story of “The Great 28.” It tells of our colleges providing the pathway and access to higher education

in every community throughout the state. It tells how we can link and transport students from one career to another from our campuses to the state’s workforce. It tells how we partner with the Division of Florida Colleges and the Great 28 to tell the story and speak with one voice about the Florida College System. It tells that through our open door, we provide the pathway and the pipeline for retaining and entering into the workforce. We do this one student at a time and one day at a time. We partner to make a difference. We accomplished much more than I have listed this year, which I stated in my State of the Union message at the convention. Our 2014 President is Peter Usinger. Peter will continue the work on increasing our membership, service projects, student services, and provide great leadership. I want to personally thank the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors for their support of the Association and hard work this year. The AFC staff was outstanding in their support and hard work (Mike, Marsha, Adrienne, Eileen, Tina, and David); you made my year as President of the Association one that I will always cherish. Thank you, the members of this great Association for the support that you provided me this year.

AFC • What is your desire? We’ve got it! 5 I CURRENT December 2013
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CEO MESSAGE
By Michael Brawer, AFC Executive Director/CEO
As we put 2013 in the AFC rearview mirror, it’s a good time to take a look at what we accomplished this year. So much of what
goes on at the AFC never gets noticed by the general membership, so please indulge me as I take a moment to catch you up on some “Did you knows.” So, did you know…• 2013 AFC President Byron Todd accomplished
all of his presidential goals – moving membership toward 10,000, advancing accreditation of the Certified College Professional program, and getting the four CCP courses online.
• The bonus for Byron was establishing the CCP program partnership with the UF Institute for Higher Education.
• The AFC staff conducted nine Council of Presidents meetings, two Trustees Commission events, two conferences, one convention, one Legislative Committee Retreat, one Executive Committee Retreat, and four Board of Directors meetings. There were also five Region conferences and a Joint Commission Spring Conference. That’s an average of almost two AFC events per month.

• Our individual membership is again growing, up over 250 since this time last year, to almost 8,200.
• We completed a total refurbishment of the exterior of our building in downtown Tallahassee, investing over $175,000 in the process over two years to research, prepare, and complete the work.
• We had 22 vacant rental offices in our building at this time last year. Now we have only five.
• We had a clean independent audit of AFC finances.
• We finalized the transition to a new social-media type web site system over a 12 month period.
• We increased the value of all AFC assets, including cash and property by $170,000, since July 1, 2012.
• Next to California and Texas, we have more institutional college members than every other state organization at 28.
• The AFC sustains partnerships for member benefits with Nova Southeastern University, Capella University, Grand Canyon University, the University of Florida Institute for Higher

Education, the Community College Conference on Legal issues, the Chair Academy, the International Conference on Teaching and Learning, and the Bellwether Conference.
• Three AFC staff members (Marsha Kiner, Adrienne Bryant, and yours truly) are serving on state and national association boards and chairing specialized committees as recognized experts in their domains.
• Three AFC staff members (Marsha Kiner, Adrienne Bryant, and Eileen Johnson) have completed or are engaged in association professional development to enhance and improve their executive leadership and association management skills.
• We now have graduated two classes of the Certified College Professional (CCP) program, the only program of its kind in the country.
• All four core courses of the CCP are now available on-line.
• The AFC legislative committee members and executive director met with dozens of legislators, testified at several committee meetings on behalf of college issues, and had meetings in Washington with congressmen, and Senators Rubio and Nelson.
• To date the AFC Foundation has contributed over $100,000 via the Burst the Balloon Campaign to reduce the AFC Building mortgage.
Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday season. Michael Brawer, CEO
How long have you worked at Polk State College?11 years, almost to the day.
What is your current title? Director of Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and Planning (I know, that’s a mouthful).
How long have you been a member of the AFC? 10 Years.
What is your favorite quote? “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” (Albert Einstein)
What is the last book you read? The Heart’s Code, by Paul Pearsall.
What do you like to do in your free time? What free time? Joke aside: Creative cooking, dining with friends, making music, and watching movies.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet? I’m torn between Buddha and Jesus. How about both, at the same time over a cold beer, contemplating visions of the future?
If you had to leave town in a hurry, knowing you would not be able to return, what five things would you take with you? Wallet, passport, laptop (has all my personal files), portable HD (with all my music), guitar (to cure the blues about what I’ve left behind)
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Playing the piano like Mozart.
If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?40—it was a perfect “midpoint”

CHAPTER HEADLINES
The Santa Fe Chapter has awarded the first scholarship to Lisa Reid. Lisa is an adjunct professor in the Health Sciences Administration Department and is working on her Ph.D. in Healthcare Administration at Capella University. She is in the midst of writing her dissertation so needless to say, she’s got a lot going on. Lisa wrote: “The scholarship may be small in nature, but will deliver a big impact to a much needed cause.” Congratulations, Lisa and keep up the good work! The SF chapter provided refreshments for three Democracy Commitment sessions. The Democracy Commitment is part of a nationwide effort among community colleges to promote civic awareness and engagement among students and the community. At Santa Fe, the College sponsored state legislators to visit the campus to discuss educational initiatives coming out of the recent legislative session, lectures for Constitution Week, as well as local candidate forums for municipal elections. For the next few months our chapter will be collecting coats for charitable organizations. Planning for a holiday social, toy drive, and socials for the centers is in the works. Elections will be held in conjunction with the social/member meeting. Our board has reviewed and edited the chapter by-laws, duties of the board members, and the application process to attend conferences and convention. As always, we are recruiting new members. Since the beginning of the year, we have added 38 to our member list.

Seminole State College held a very successful school supply drive to benefit HOPE Helps, Inc in Oviedo for their Back to School Bash. We have sold chocolate covered pretzels sticks & Jacks Links to raise funds for our book scholarship. Oviedo Campus rep Natashia Jones was wildly successful in these sales. Our President-Elect, Randy Pawlowski spoke to faculty and staff at the Oviedo Fall Welcome Back, introducing AFC and distributing applications. At College wide Convocation AFC had a table set up to distribute AFC applications and recruit new members. We awarded 2 book scholarships to date. We have sent out 128 ‘welcome letters’ to every ‘new hire’ this year. We have sent 6 phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers this year. And we have found a local ‘drop off’ to save the charity postage costs.

TCC FACUlTy mEmBER’s ART REAChEs WidER AUdiENCE
Carlos Miranda has taught multimedia studies at Tallahassee Community College for 15 years. He has been an artist for even longer. Miranda, whose work encompasses photography, painting and digital painting, was recently accepted as a member of a worldwide artist community exhibiting through the online branch of the prestigious Saachi Gallery of London. The artist said that his participation in Saachi Online is the first time all of his work has been hosted at a single location. The wide reach of Saachi Online, and the fact that visitors may order prints of works, not only originals, expands Miranda’s opportunities to reach art collectors and art lovers. In fact he has already sold his first print through the gallery. “I am excited about this new prospect,” he said.
Pensacola State College Dean Debbie Douma recently received the national Campus Impact Award for Outstanding Grants Professional at the 47th annual conference of the Council for Resource Development in Washington, DC. Douma heads the PSC Institutional Effectiveness and Grants Department and was cited for her dedication to improving access to higher education and her tireless work to empower others to succeed. In particular, Douma was recognized for her role in securing and managing an $8.5 million Health Profession Opportunity Grant to provide low-income individuals with education, training and support services needed to prepare them for employment or advancement in nursing and other health care fields. Douma’s exceptional knowledge of her community’s needs and her efforts to form community partnerships ensured the success of this grant-funded program. These partnerships provide low-income students with resources such as childcare, transportation, emergency funds, career coaching and other tools for success.

The grant is funded through 2015 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Family Assistance-Administration for Children and Families. “This award was certainly an honor, but I would like to acknowledge that there is a dedicated team behind every grant application we submit,” Douma says. “You know, we measure our success through the number and amount of grants awarded to the college; but, I also attend the PSC commencement ceremonies, because there I can actually see the impact of our resource development efforts multiply throughout our community. Every time a graduate walks across that stage, our community becomes a little bit better place to live.” Douma joined the PSC staff in 1999 as a secretary and became head of Institutional Effectiveness and Grants in 2008. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of West Florida and a doctorate from the University of Florida.
Miranda teaches several courses that are part of the graphic design and computer game design programs in TCC’s Division of Technology and Professional Programs. The course that he finds connects most directly with his work as an artist is Photoshop. “I try to teach my students how to look at photo retouching and photo manipulation from an artistic point of view, not just as a software technique,” said Miranda. Miranda is also an independent filmmaker and cinematographer and served as director of the Tallahassee Film Festival’s 48 Hour Film Contest in 2010. The Saatchi Gallery is one of the most-visited art museums in London. It is an important forum for contemporary art, and has helped many young artists launch their careers. Saatchi Online allows a greater number of artists to exhibit and sell their work and attract the attention of art lovers and art collectors.Miranda’s work may be viewed at www.saatchionline.com/mirandac5540.

out. His one hour of classroom time has become a treasured feature of the program and one that the youth always look forward to What is so inspiring about seeing Jeb in action is that while he enables the class members to have fun while learning, the experience is never about him. He appreciates the respect and love of the youth, but he is acutely aware that it is not about him but rather about them, the youth participants. Members of those first couple of classes that are today college and professional school graduates living and working in the world still speak fondly not only of Jeb but of the experience and education and growth he helped to inspire in them. Ten years of doing what you love is pretty easy, and the time does fly by quickly, but like any long term commitment, he really has given up a lot to help make the program as highly successful as it is. This award was presented at the Leadership Tallahassee Membership Conference in November.
Jeb Blackburn was honored as an intregal part of the Youth Leadership Training by Leadership Tallahassee. As a volunteer, Jeb not only helps youth receive the educational component of the program but also receive Tallahassee Community College credit. Before the first class was presented. Jeb was involved with the YLT from the beginning, before the first YLT program day. Early on the decision was made to offer college credit. To more formally provide an appropriate college credit curriculum Jeb was recruited. He was enthusiastic about the opportunity and signed on for Class 1. To provide some context for what he would be doing throughout the program year, he also volunteered to attend the opening retreat where he played a significant role. What started as a one year commitment is now in its tenth year. He has attended every retreat and every program day for the last nine years and he is on board again this year for Class 10. That is over 75 full days because he is there every day—ll day to help

If the title of this article caught your eye, chances are technology has driven you to the brink of insanity at some point over the last
several years. I remember when technology was simple and made life better. Email, Bulletin Board Services, Prodigy, AOL, and CompuServe changed the way we communicated and networked. Of course these platforms have now given way to Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter and the like. Previous and current
platforms have expanded our sense of community beyond four walls, city limits, state lines, and internationally. Because of this, we find ourselves searching for ways to streamline, downsize, and weed out the noise. I have always been a fan of all things related to technology including the latest and greatest gadgets, software, and pushing the envelope of what systems can do, but over the last four years I have felt overwhelmed at times by all of the options that are available. Are you as constantly amazed as I am at how others appear to seamlessly keep everything organized and be productive without tearing their hair out when they receive just one. more. email? Realizing that it is not going to get any easier, I set out to find tools, tricks, and tips that I could use to help maintain my sanity in this digital age.
1Get OrGanized!Evernote (www.evernote.com) – Create notebooks, add
notes, pictures, and record audio. I love that I can use Evernote on my desktop, laptop, tablet, and
smartphone. I have seen it integrated nicely with other products such as Live Minutes (www.liveminutes.com). You can save your ideas, things you like, things you hear and things you see. Add keywords and tags to search through notes and notebooks quickly. I use the free version which is quite robust and serves my needs well. You can upgrade to premium for $45.00 a year to add features such as passcode lock, offline notebooks, increased note size (100mb vs. 10mb), and the ability to allow colleagues to edit notes that you share. Doodle (www.doodle.com) – No more email threads and CC’ing the entire world. Create a doodle poll quickly and efficiently. Enter a range of dates and times, save the poll and email a link to your team. Everyone enters their names, checks off the dates and times they are available and voilà, you can quickly scan and see the perfect or almost perfect day and time to schedule your meeting. And it is free. Of course free comes with pesky ads, but in my opinion, completely worth the time I save figuring out an email trail. Trello (www.trello.com) – It is Pinterest for project management and organization. I love this tool for its simple and clean layout. Create boards for projects and keep up with progress by creating to do, doing, and done cards. You can make your boards private or

can make your boards private or public and invite members to your boards using an email address. Also available across many platforms and has an upgrade option as well, but I am happy with the free product. Upgrade for $45.00 a year and have the ability to upload your own stickers, backgrounds, and larger attachments. Unrollme (https://unroll.me) – A new tool I picked up from the YAP Group on Facebook. I am now a very proud user of this little gem. Here the description from
their website: “Imagine a world
where you get deals when you want them and read newsletters when you feel like it. Envision the absence of social notifications, service updates and free vacation offers. Well, this is exactly how your inbox should be--with relevant information in
one, tidy email that contains the subscription emails you actually want to receive. With all of your extra time, you just might start to consider those free vacation offers.” - Yeah, this is awesome. Go sign up NOW while it is still free! Thank you Meeghan DeCagna for the tip and Maggie McGary for the second!
2COllabOrate!Dropbox (www.dropbox.com) – No more lost or broken
flash drives. After losing precious information for what must be the fourth time in my life, I am finally giving up the constant struggle of searching through no less than five
flash drives for a single document
or image. Yep, I did it. I finally decided to recall my login information for Dropbox. Eight months later, I am still in love. I can locate files on the fly from
my desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphone. Yes, you need to make sure you are connected to the Internet so you can sync your files, but the ability to retrieve your documents anytime, anywhere is totally worth it. Bonus tip: Invite your organization’s visiting speakers to place their presentations directly into your Dropbox account. No more wondering if you saved the “correct” presentation. Basecamp (www.basecamp.com) – I used Basecamp a few years ago to manage our association’s AMS migration and implementation. While I was not a fan at the time, the YAP Group consistently gave Basecamp received high marks. Basecamp is a project management tool that helps you organize work projects with your team. They do have a 60-day free trial so check it out.

Next time I have a big project, I will take a look at it again because, well, YAPStars know their stuff. Asana (www.asana.com) – Asana’s project management tool quickly became a favorite of mine. It was easy to implement, use and assign tasks. You will not need to send weekly status emails or have a lot of meetings. It is free
and has a nice array of
integrations for dashboards, time tracking, and mobile (www.asana.com/apps). Evernote, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Mailchimp are just a few of the awesome integration apps they have available. With unlimited projects and up to fifteen team members each, the free price tag makes Asana a great option. You can upgrade to a premium plan for more team members and support starting at $50.00 a month.
3 Create and Share!Jing (www.techsmith.com/jing) – Jing has changed my
life. No, seriously. Here is another FREE tool that allows me to quickly add notated screenshots to my online communications. I can show members and clients exactly what I need them to see. In my association, I have used it to record five minute or less training videos for frequently asked
questions. It has helped cut down the number of
“Can you send me my password” emails and phone calls I receive. Use it to create cool marketing messages and advocacy videos for your members. Screenr (www.screenr.com) – The first screen casting tool I used based on a recommendation from my friend Deanna Mims. Nothing to download or install, but it does require the use of Java. Therefore, if your organization is not Java friendly, Jing would be a better tool for you. However, if you just
want to test out screen casting and like to live on the edge on your personal device, it is a great starter tool. You can create and share five minute screencasts everywhere. I like it because you can record from a Mac or PC and the videos play well on iPhones. Read: No Flash required. Camtasia Studio (www.techsmith.com/camtasia) – If you are feeling extra spunky and have $299.00 burning a hole in your pocket or budget, then upgrade to Camtasia. Record your screen to capture PowerPoint slides, software demos, webpages, and more. You can edit recordings and camera video, and customize your recordings and videos with ready to use media themes. When I used it for the first time earlier this year to create a video entry for the WellQuest Challenge, I could not believe how quickly and easily I was able to figure it out and design a pretty darn good video in just under five hours.
4 PreSent!Prezi (www.prezi.com) – What is not to love? Tired
of boring and static PowerPoint presentations? Prezi allows you to “lead your audience on a visual journey” (their words, not mine). I love Prezi because it keeps the mind active for both the speaker and the audience. If you have not used it in a year or so, check it out. They have tons of great standard templates or search through thousands of actual presentations to find a design you like so you do not have to recreate the wheel (provided the user has allowed their Prezi to be copied). Prezi is another great free option
that your budget will love. Present.me (www.present.me) – If you find that Jing’s five minutes of recording time is not long enough and that Camtasia Studio is a little too robust for your needs, then Present.me is your solution. Personal plans start at free for just ten recordings a month with unlimited playback. You can embed the videos in your website and they playback on desktops, tablets, and other mobile devices. Present.me allows you to upload your slides (PowerPoint or PDF) and record a presentation with audio or video. Make a mistake? No need to start over, just trim the mistake and then continue recording. The free product also comes with limited analytics to measure loads, plays, likes, downloads, and shares. Premium personal plans are $16.00 a month and you receive 1024mb upload limit (vs. 20mb on free), seventy-five recordings a month, and video uploads. Business premium plans start at $85.00 a month. You can have up to ten users and each user gets twenty recording per month. You also get offline playback, analytics and tracking, and security encryption.
5COnneCt!Join.me (https://join.me) – Another tool that received
five thumbs up from the YAP group. The free version allows for up to ten participants, screen sharing, Internet Calling, share control, chat, and file sharing. You can view it on iPad/iPhone or Android. I’ve used this for quick one on one help sessions with my chapter leaders and members. You can upgrade to a premium plan for $149.00 per year, per user. You can contact them

plus.google.com) – Great alternative to Skype. Free video chat with up to ten participants and the ability to share your screen. Bring in files from Google Drive or add silly effects to lighten the mood. G+ Hangout has been a great tool for my ASAE Diversity Executive Leadership cohort. It has allowed us to better
communicate with one another, especially one of our members who happens to be deaf. Not only can he see our smiling faces, but we can interact and bond with him and
his interpreter - Priceless. As you have been reading, have you thought about ways you can integrate one or more of these tools into your life or organization? Can any of them save you
time and/or money based on what you are doing or using currently? I also need to give a shout out to Beth Ziensenis (https://www.facebook.com/AskBethZ). She has written two books on the subject of free and low cost online tools, tech tips, and apps you can use to get organized and creative. And oddly enough when I went to verify her Facebook URL, I saw that her Friday Nerd Words post is about one of my favorite tools listed in this article. Check out her post, “All About Evernote.”
