LOCAL UNION NO. 690

Val Holstrom Secretary–treasurer OCTOBER 2015

There are many con-tracts that are currently being negotiated or that have recently been rati-fied. Your Business Represent-atives and Negotiating Committee members have been working very hard to bargain for fair wage and benefits increases, as well as working conditions. The summer and fall has been a busy time for your Local Union. We’ve been in negotiations with many of your employers, both in the public and private sector. Business Agent Joe Kuhn and I have been successfully working, in solidarity with our Brothers and Sisters from other Local Unions, during this current bargaining cycle with Spokane County. Local 690 is also in bargaining or have settled many contracts in the private sector such as Lee & Eastes, Ban-ner Fuel, Mondelez, Central Pre-Mix, Sysco, Waste Man-agement, Franz Bakery and Bonner General Hospital, just to name a few. As we fight to protect our members and enhance our contracts I can’t stress the importance of having the sup-port of you, the members. Employers know when the bar-gaining committee has the backing, support and solidari-ty of its members, which in turn gives your committee greater leverage to reach the goals given to us in our proposal meetings. I want to thank everyone who attended our Shop Steward Seminar on October 3rd. The topics covered were the most interesting and informative we’ve had in recent memory, according to the assessments received from our members. One of the things we learned was we, the middle class and Labor, are still being attacked on many fronts in the legislature and media with slick, politically correct sounding campaigns promising “Payroll Protection” and “Family Friendly” legislation that is actu-ally targeting the middle class. Groups with deceiving names like the “Freedom Foun-dation” which are actually funded by individuals like the Koch Brothers, have budgeted hundreds of millions of dollars to support candidates and legislation that will hurt working men and women. They support legislation like “Right To Work for Less”, both on a State and Local level. For example, there was an initiative to bring “Right To Work” to Anchorage and in Washington State, several Counties tried to pass “Right To Work” initiatives. But, through the vigilance of our Joint Council and soli-darity of Teamster Local Unions and our members, we have beaten them back. Right here in Spokane, our elected Representative, Mi-chael Baumgartner, has tried to introduce this harmful “Right To Work” legislation. Thankfully we are watching and educating our members, and with the support of oth-er elected officials and “Action Days” in Olympia, we have stopped this from coming to Washington. We need to pay attention so we can do more to protect the free-doms and rights we have on the job today. If you are interested in volunteering for one of the “Action Days” in Spokane or Olympia or for one of the Local Union’s charity events, call the Hall and give us your contact information. You can make a difference! Page 2

PUBLIC SECTOR UPDATE

The following Public Sector Contracts were just re-cently ratified: ● City of Cheney Dispatch

● Whitman County Corrections

● Spokane County Fire District No. 4

● Colville Sworn and Non-Sworn - 1 year rollover

Stevens County Deputies began their first round of negotiations on September 29, 2015.

In September, Teamsters Local 690 won a wrongful termination arbitration against Central Pre-Mix, which returned a 24 year employee back to work. After be-ing off work for 19 weeks, the arbitrator awarded full back-pay, and benefits with no loss of seniority to our member. The termination was reduced to a time-served two week suspension!

Teamsters Local 690 con-tinues honoring our mem-bers with their years of ser-vice pins. We have had some questions on the pro-cess of the pin distribution. Our database only allows us to generate the names by initiation date. If you were a transfer from anoth-er Local, there is a chance that we don’t have an initi-ation date in the system. Since we only began this recognition process last year and if we missed your anniversary, you will come up on your next milestone anniversary. Here are some of our most recent presentations. Congratulations Members!

“Long” Live to Ride and Drive Poker Run

The Annual “Long Live to Ride and Drive” Charity Poker Ride was held on September 12, 2015.

We had 40 participants this year and raised approximately $1,200.00 for Cancer Care Northwest.

The winners of this year’s ride are: Marnie J. Oya - Highest Hand $300; Vaughn Miller - 2nd Highest Hand $200; and 3rd Place with the Lowest Hand was Robin Jackson $100.

Teamsters Local 690, along with the “Long Live to Ride and Drive” Committee, would like to thank all the participants, spon-sors and businesses that donated to benefit this worthy cause.

We would especially like to thank Shasta Fasolo for her hard work in organizing this event and the Happy Hatter for printing the T-Shirts!
