~ Sustaining standards of care in the NHS

The Kings Fund has published Tackling the growing crisis in the NHS: an agenda for action. This briefing investigates three big challenges facing the NHS in England: sustaining existing services and standards of care; developing new and better models of care; and reforming the NHS 'from within'. http://www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/publications/emergency-general-surgery-challenges-and-opportunities

~ Review of how NHS trusts investigate and learn from deaths

CQC is carrying out a review of how NHS trusts identify, report, investigate and learn from deaths of people using their services. CQC’s review will consider the quality of practice in relation to identifying, reporting and investigating the death of any person in contact with a health service managed by an NHS trust; whether the person is in hospital, receiving care in a community setting or living in their own home. The review will pay particular attention to how NHS trusts investigate and learn from deaths of people with a learning disability or

mental health problem. http://www.cqc.org.uk/content/cqc-review-how-nhs-trusts-investigate-and-learn-deaths

~ Cardiovascular disease prevention

The National Cardiovascular Intelligence Network has published a second edition of the CVD Primary Care Intelligence Packs. Each clinical commissioning group has a pack which provides practice level data on prevention, detection and management across a range of cardiovascular conditions: high cardiovascular (CVD) risk and hypertension; stroke and atrial fibrillation; diabetes; kidney disease; coronary heart disease; and heart failure. https://www.england.nhs.uk/2016/04/matt-kearney-6/

~ NICE guidance: preoperative tests for elective surgery

NICE has published new guidance Routine preoperative tests for elective surgery (NG45). This guideline covers routine preoperative tests for people aged over 16 who are having elective surgery. It aims to reduce unnecessary testing by advising which tests to offer people before minor, intermediate and major or complex surgery, taking into account specific comorbidities (cardiovascular, renal and respiratory conditions and diabetes and obesity). It does not cover pregnant women or people having cardiovascular procedures or neurosurgery. https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng45

~ Emergency general surgery

The Nuffield Trust has published Emergency general surgery: challenges and opportunities. Commissioned by the Royal College of Surgeons, this report focuses on the challenges faced by emergency general surgery include variation in outcomes, workforce, organisational and operational issues and underlying demographic and epidemiological trends. The report suggests various potential solutions to the problems facing emergency general surgery. http://www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/publications/emergency-general-surgery-challenges-and-opportunities

~ Improving the Patient Experience Through the Health Care Physical Environment This HPOE guide, a collaboration with the American Society for Healthcare Engineering, explores ways hospital and health system leaders can use the physical environment to improve the patient experience. The guide describes a "people, process, place" model that will help hospital and health system leaders identify people-centered ways to improve the patient experience of care through: http://www.hpoe.org/inc-hpoe/dhtml/gated-content-form.dhtml?error=email&dl=/Reports-HPOE/gate/2016/2016-ASHE-guide-03-31-

~ Socioeconomic inequalities in health care

The University of York Centre for Health Economics has published Socioeconomic inequalities in health care in England (Research paper 128). This paper reviews what is known about socioeconomic inequalities in health care in England, with particular attention to inequalities relative to need that may be considered unfair (‘inequities’). http://www.york.ac.uk/che/news/2016/che-research-paper-129/
