Konark Sun temple

Context-:

A plan to restore and preserve the nearly

800-year-old Konark Sun temple in Odisha

would be drawn up soon, after a two-day

conference of experts at the end of the

month.

The 13th century temple, a UNESCO World

Heritage Site, had been filled with sand and

sealed by the British authorities in 1903 to

stabilise the structure.

The cultural industries are key

art forms tend to boost tourism, sustain

About temple-:

Konark Sun Temple, located in the East

Odisha near the sacred city of Puri.

Built in 13th century by King

Narasimhadeva I (AD 1238-1264).

Its scale, refinement and conception

represent the strength and stability of

the Ganga Empire as well as the value

systems of the historic milieu.

The temple is designed in the shape of a

colossal chariot.

It is dedicated to the sun God.

राजा नरवसम्हदेि प्रथम (1238-1264 ई।) द्वारा

In this sense, it is directly and

materially linked to Brahmanism and tantric

belief systems.

The Konark temple is widely known not only

for its architectural grandeur but also for the

intricacy and profusion of sculptural work.

It marks the highest point of achievement

of Kalinga architecture depicting the grace,

the joy and the rhythm of life all its wondrous

variety.

It was declared a UNESCO world heritage site

in 1984.

There are two rows of 12 wheels on each

side of the Konark sun temple.

Some say the wheels represent the 24

hours in a day and others say the 12

months.

The seven horses are said to symbolize the

seven days of the week.

Sailors once called this Sun Temple of

Konark, the Black Pagoda because it was

supposed to draw ships into the shore and

cause shipwrecks.

उडाता था।

Konârak is the invaluable link in the

history of the diffusion of the cult of

Surya, which originating in Kashmir

during the 8th century, finally reached

the shores of Eastern India.

Criminalization of Politics

Context-:

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered

political parties to publish the entire

criminal history of their candidates for the

Assembly and Lok Sabha elections along

with the reasons that goaded them to

field suspected criminals over decent

people.

The judement ordered political parties to

submit compliance reports with the

Election Commission of India within 72

hours or risk contempt of court action.

Details-:

The information should be published in a

local and a national newspaper as well as

the parties’ social media handles.

It should mandatorily be published either

within 48 hours of the selection of

candidates or less than two weeks before

the first date for filing of nominations,

whichever is earlier.

The judgment is applicable to parties both

at the Central and State levels.

criminal antecedents of a candidate

should be detailed and include the

nature of the offences, charges framed

against him, the court concerned and the

A political party should explain to the

public through its published material

how the “qualifications or achievements

or merit” of a candidate, charged with a

crime, impressed it enough to cast aside

the smear of his criminal background.

Significance-:

Protecting the political system from

criminalization has been the intention of the

supreme court from the beginning.

What does the RPA say on this?

Currently, under the Representation of

Peoples (RP) Act, lawmakers cannot contest

elections only after their conviction in a

criminal case.

Section 8 of the Representation of the

People (RP) Act, 1951 disqualifies a person

convicted with a sentence of two years or

more from contesting elections.

Context-:

The 43rd session of the governing council of the

International fund for Agricultural

Development(IFAD) was held at the Food and

Agriculture Organization(FAO) in Rome,Italy.

About IFAD-:

The International Fund for Agricultural

Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of

the United Nations, was one of the major

outcomes of the 1974 World Food

Conference.

गिवनिंग काउंवसल के 43 िें सत्र का

आयञजन रञम, इिली में खाद्य और कृवष

Three years after the Rome conference, IFAD

The 15th finance commission suggested the

formation of a Fiscal Committee and a Group on

defence and internal security.

About fiscal committee-:

The Fifteenth Finance Commission will soon set

up a panel to address issues related to fiscal

policy for both the Centre and the States, and

present a road map for the same.

The committee will address some of the issues on

fiscal policy, particularly in relation to the debt

and the deficit of the States as well as the Central

committee will enhance the ability of the

The Commission had also constituted a group on

defence and internal security, whose mandate will

be ‘to examine whether a separate mechanism for

funding of defence and internal security ought to

be set up, and if so, how such a mechanism could

be operationalised.
