DEACON’S REFLECTION MASS INTENTIONS

Be A Light

Today, as we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, we learn how God revealed Himself to all people of all nations, not just a chosen few. Our readings focus on light: “Rise up in splendor Jeru-salem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. ...Nations shall walk by your light.” Is 60:1-3. The beginning of the second chapter of Matthew’s Gospel announces the arrival of the three Magi in Jerusalem, seeking the newborn king of the Jews.

These three men were astronomers by vocation, and for many years they had been studying the stars in the firmament. When this un-usual new star rose, they knew that an extraordinary event had to have taken place. They were determined to find the cause of this star.

Led only by the light of this new star, they then set out on their trek. Their journey had to have been uncertain and perilous. After all, they had no maps, no one to guide them, only the light of this star. We can only imagine how they must have felt when the star disappeared from their sight in Jerusalem. They began to ask around, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?”

King Herod met secretly with the Magi to find out what they knew. Herod then sent them to Bethlehem and instructed them to return to him after they had seen the child. Amazingly after they left Herod’s palace, the star reappeared to guide them, to lead them to the place where Jesus was. When they entered the house, “They prostrated them-selves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and of-fered gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Mt 2:11.

Like the Magi opened themselves to the revelation of God through the guidance of the star, so too, we can open ourselves to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to reveal His plan for each of us. He can help us recognize that God’s plan may not be our plan. His method of leading us to peace and happiness is straight and narrow. It may require us to let go of worldly distractions, change our bad habits, and fight temptations.

We praise and thank the Lord for the revelation of His love and mercy through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. May we be faithful witnesses to His light. May our lives “shine as light in the world.” Phil 2:15.

May we always follow the light that shines from God, and may we reflect that light to all that we meet.

Deacon Phillip Nguyen

Adult Education Classes

Church History in the High Middle Ages

There is still time to join us! Kick off the New Year by learning more about the history of our faith! Church History in the High Middle Ages was an exciting period in which crusaders fought in the Holy Land and Spain, St. Thomas Aquinas and the Scholastics described our faith in great theological and philosophical detail, and papal elections were set down as they still exist today. Join presenter Andrew Lynch to learn about all this and much more in this six-week series that began on Thursday, January 3. The next class meets on January 10th in the Father Burak room at 7 pm. Those interested can register ($10) when they arrive.

Please visit the parish's adult education web page for more information (www.cureofars.com/adult-formation-classes) or email Andrew Lynch ([email protected]) with any questions.

PARISH EVENTS

Our Parish Family Weekly Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Please join us every Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm in the church to pray for marriages, families, vocations and for those who have left the faith to return to the Sacraments. This is for the whole family, children included. We will pray this beautiful and powerful prayer as we call on Our Lady’s intercession for these intentions.

Monthly Food Drive on January 12 and 13

Please bring NONNON-PERISHABLE food to the Catholic Charities truck on site after each Mass. Many in need are depending on us. The following are special requests: canned meat (tuna, chicken, salmon), peanut butter, canned or dried beans, canned fruits, low sodium vegetables, pasta sauce and canned tomatoes, cereal (whole grain, low sugar content), whole grains (pasta, pancake mix, etc.), oatmeal or grits, and rice (brown, white or basmati). We will be passing out grocery bags this weekend. Thank you for your help and support!

Check out the CD/Book Kiosk

Check out our Curé of Ars CD/Book Kiosk that is located next to the Fr. Burak Room. CD’s from the best Catholic speakers are available for a small donation of only $4.00. Books from many of the best Catholic writers are available for the small donation of only $5.00! These books and CD’s normally cost much, much more. What great gifts to help you, or someone you love, deepen an understanding and love for the Catholic faith!

“Listen. Put it into your heart … the thing that frightened you,

the thing that afflicted you is nothing: Do not let it disturb you …Am I not here, I who am your mother? Are you not under my

shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you

not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you

need something more?”
