Recently, 6B and 6C went on a trip

to the Toronto International Chil-

dren’s Film Festival. They had the

opportunity to view the Norwegian

movie ‘The Tough Guys’. The

film’s theme was bullying at

school. Despite the subtitles and

the serious theme, the film was en-

gaging and inspiring. It put a new

perspective on standing up for

yourself. The main character Mod-

ulf was a victim of bullying. He

never stands up to the bullies. Eve-

rything changes when Lise moves

in next door. They became good

friends and she teaches him heroes

help everyone, including them-

selves. That is when Modulf real-

izes that he has to stand up for him-

self. Director Christian Lo did an

amazing job of bringing words to

life. He did something that not

everyone is able to do – convey a

serious message with humour. Af-

ter the movie, both classes were

able to meet the director and ask

questions. This is definitely a

movie that I recommend to my

peers!

Be the Change

Be the Change is making sleeping mats

out of milk bags for people living in

third world countries. It takes about

800 milk bags to make a full mat! To

start off the mat, we cut the bags into

individual loops. Next, we make long

chains. We use a loom to create hori-

zontal rows of seven milk chains and

attach more milk bag loops together to

weave them in vertical columns. If you

want to donate milk bags, ensure that they are dry and place them in the Be

the Change Milk Bag collection box outside the office.

“Le jour au Papillon est magnifique! Nous adorns le Papillon, c’est très formidable”

- Catherine H., 6B

Once again the Grade 6 French classes have experienced a memorable trip that included French culture,

French language and French nourriture. During the school year the Grade 6 students learn about French cul-

ture and expand their knowledge of oral and written French. A school wide French cultural event of “Le Café”

reinforced what the students had learned. Mr. Herszkowicz decided to put the students’ French skills to good

use by taking them to parts of downtown Toronto that resemble European cities such as Paris. The dining ex-

perience at the elegant French restaurant Le Papillon was the icing on the cake. As part of the French curricu-

lum, students learned how to order different foods and meals in French. Students wrote an English and /or

French retell of their day’s experience.

Here is what Grade 6 students have to say about the trip and their experience:

“ One word describes the “ Le Papillon” trip - AMAZING! I loved it! It gave me a chance to talk in French outside of

the class”

- Miona, 6G

“When I got to the subway, I imagined I was in Paris with the CN Tower as the Eiffel Tower!“

- Eva, 6E

“My classmates and I had a good time at the St. Lawrence Market, Le Papillon and the Distillery. I knew that I would

never experience something as cool as this ever again in my life”

- Bill H., 6G

“ Thanks to Mr. H we learned how to order food in French”

- Ansel, 6G

“ I have two words to describe the French trip - incroyable et fantastique!”

- Grace, 6E

“Overall I would say that Le Papillon was one of the best trips I have been on and I look forward to seeing the reactions

of other Grade 6 students after they go on this amazing trip. Thank you Monsieur H for an amazing day!!

- Jasmine K., 6E

“Without Monsieur H and his careful planning we would have never been able to indulge in French culture. The French

trip was a great experience! Overall, c’est un voyage mémorable ”

- Hansol, 6E

Ultimate Frisbee

The fledgling sport of Ultimate Frisbee has become part of

the CVMS culture. We have two co-ed teams – one from

grade 6 and one from grade 8. Both teams had an out-

standing 2014 season.

Cummer’s Grade 8 team went undefeated in their tourna-

ment, “stacking and flicking” their way to the North

Championship Finals. Congratulations to our players: Ben

C., Luka, William, Nathaniel, Jason, Julia, Alison, Esther,

Jasmine, Kendra, Jenson, Katie, Xinyi, Kevin, Jacob,

Minju, Steven, Britney, Ben M., and Emma.

Our grade 6 team played many close and competitive

games during their tournament. Although they did not

make the playoffs, they certainly were one of the most

spirited and talented teams in the league. Coaches Mr.

Tong and Mr. Wai are very proud of the sportsmanship and effort of both teams.

TumbleBookCloud's Summer Reading Program for students

TumbleCloud has set students up with a free 3 month subscription with unlimited ac-

cess from school/library and home. TumbleBookCloud is an online database of over

1000 eBooks, chapter books, National Geographic videos, and audio books geared for

middle school and high school students of all reading levels. The growing collection

of graphic novels is the biggest draw to readers on the site. In the spring and summer they will be li-

censing and 'tumbling' over 150 brand new titles from graphic novel and traditional publishers. Be-

sides with the content that we know students will love, the site is configured to work specifically with smart phones and

tablets. To log on to their account they have to visit:

North York Track Championships

Bridgette B., Jinan F., Andrew L., and Alec M., who all came in 1st place. Kudos to our Grade 7 Boys team

other in preparation for this show. A couple of special mentions are

necessary. First, to Lauren W., Julia C., Ryan M. and Benjamin M. in

their preparatory work for Pharell Williams’ Happy. Second, to Andrew

L. who downloaded the guitar music for Bruno Mars’ Marry You during the

dress rehearsal and then performed with the vocalists the next day.
