ATOMI FOR YEAR 11 AND YEAR 12 STUDENTS.

Cumberland High School has invested in the online resources created by ATOMI

Year 11 and Year 12 students will gain complete access to hundreds of online modules and resources to support our students as they prepare for the HSC.

Self-described as video-built learning for maximum retention, with interactive quizzes and AI-powered revision, ATOMI is available 24/7 on almost any internet enabled device.

ATOMI will enable:

Enhanced results - at the core, HSC Hub is designed to work alongside staff to enhance academic performance, providing students the tools to achieve the best possible results.

Unlimited access - each student will receive complete access to 1000’s of premium curriculum aligned videos designed for HSC success.

Increased support - HSC Hub is available to students 24/7 on all devices. This means students will receive support beyond the classroom at times when teachers are not accessible.

Supporting online learning – students are able access HSC Hub resources by issuing videos for homework and receiving data on individual student use and progress. This facilitates deeper learning and better HSC preparation.

Next Term….

Online learning will continue. Students will be required to work from home, following their regular timetabled sessions and engaging through the relevant online platforms.

Staff will be engaged in online professional learning on Monday 27th April. Students will resume their online learning on Tuesday 28th April and commence with the WEEK A timetable. Please see the class times below.

Students are reminded to follow these times and enrol in every lesson. They need to actively participate, make comments and demonstrate their learning in each lesson. Rolls will continue to be marked and SMS texts will be sent to parents if students do not engage.

Term 2 will be challenging but again we are here to support and will continue to do everything we can to ensure that our community prevails! As I sit and reflect on this term – with all of the uncertainty and all of the challenges – I feel extremely grateful and privileged to be working with such an amazing community! Thank you to all of you! Ms Mechel Pikoulas Principal, Cumberland High School

Online Learning

It is in unprecedented times that we send out this edition of our newsletter. We would like to start by congratulating staff, students and parents/carers for their passion and commitment to the education and wellbeing of our students. Cumberland High School continues to support our online learning platforms by outlining, communicating and evaluating our Continuity of Learning Plan. The Plan outlines student, staff and parent responsibilities. See details below.

Cumberland High School Learning Continuity Plan - Implementation from Tuesday 24 March 2020

At Cumberland High School, we strive to maintain high learning expectations and to support student wellbeing. Our plan is outlined below

FOR STUDENTS

The school’s preferred platforms for remote learning are Edmodo and Google Classroom. All codes have been created and distributed to parents and students. The expectation is that students will engage in online lessons based on their usual scheduled school timetable.

• Log on to the online class platform at the start of the usual lesson time. Remember Session 3 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday will start at 12pm and finish at 1:10pm to give you a break between Session 2 and Session 3.

• Your teacher will start the lesson with an introduction outlining the lesson aim.

• Confirm your attendance as per teacher instructions at the start of each Session as the class roll will be marked on Millennium by the teacher for every Session (except Home Room. Home Room will not run on our online platform).

• It is very important that all students continue to engage throughout the lesson, making contributions and demonstrating their learning.

• Lesson activities with be uploaded with clear instructions regarding timing and deadlines.

• You are encouraged to maintain an interactive dialogue/ conversation/ interaction with other students. Use only appropriate language when engaging with teachers and peers online. Make sure that all your comments, pictures, emoji’s or any other items posted are appropriate and do not offend your teachers and/or peers.

• Lessons will be concluded with a wrap up that summarises the learning completed during the lesson and outlines any work that needs to be completed in advance of the next lesson.

Page 6: Cumberland High School · Cumberland High School Newsletter 2020 - Issue 3, 9th April Online Learning at Cumberland High School What an extraordinary term! It is certainly not as

Cumberland High School Newsletter 2020 - Issue 3, 9th April

FOR STUDENTS

• Be patient and allow enough time for your teachers to post lesson instructions and responses to your questions/ comments. Sometimes your teachers may not be able to answer your question until the next day.

• Extension Classes before and after school will continue at the regular scheduled times – but online.

• If you are unable to ‘attend’ an online lesson, you are expected to catch up on any work missed and provide a reason/ explanation for that absence to your teacher.

• For Year 8-11 students, it is advised that during Sport time you undertake some form of exercise, keeping in mind social distancing. The same is advised for Year 7 in your usual Session 2 Wednesday Sport time.

• ASSESSMENT TASKS:

All take-home assessment tasks are to be submitted online by the due date. For all in-class tasks, students will be required to follow the advice of their teachers. It may be that an alternative task is created OR that the task will be postponed. Teachers will clarify online for each of their classes.

Library Support

Some of the ways that our Library is able to support our students at home:

• Our ebook collection - available by downloading the App ePlatform by wheelers or via https://cumberland.wheelers.co/ ePlatform have doubled our loan limits to support our students.

• Our library Website encourages our students in their reading (reading lists) and study skills which may be accessed from the search box on the front page of the DET portal and via https://oliver264.library.det.nsw.edu.au/oliver/home/news

• Students emailing Mrs Alexander with research requests for journal articles - especially senior students with depth studies.

How can I help?

Cumberland High School Newsletter 2020 - Issue 3, 9th April

FOR STAFF:

The school’s preferred platforms for remote learning are Edmodo and Google Classroom. The expectation is that staff will maintain interactive lessons based on their usual school timetable.

• Log on to the electronic class platform at the start of the usual lesson time.

• Start the lesson with an introduction that outlines the learning intentions/lesson aim. This could be done by welcoming them via a written post on the google classroom or by uploading a recorded introduction.

• Take the roll on Millennium (and keep electronic records)

• Upload lesson activities with clear expectations regarding timing and deadlines.

• Maintain interactive dialogue/ conversation/ interaction with your students

• Close lesson with a wrap up that summarises the learning completed during the lesson and outlines possible work to be completed in advance of the next lesson.

• Also, if there are any students who are having difficulty in completing the set tasks online and would like additional support, please email one of our Learning Support Teachers to get additional help.

FOR PARENTS:

Providing continuity of learning is important when unexpected events happen and provide support to all students in the event that they are temporarily unable to attend. The aim of Cumberland High School’s online/remote learning is to maintain, where possible, the curriculum and daily school timetable for our students. We strive to maintain high learning expectations and to support student wellbeing.

We hope you work with us to help your child maintain a regular pattern of learning. You can help your child by ensuring that:

• they maintain a regular daily routine, following their normal school timetable

• they engage actively in their daily online lessons that their teachers will provide

• they feel supported and well-connected to our school community through the remote learning provided

• they maintain regular eating, exercise (including during Session 2 Sport time on Wednesday and Wednesday afternoon Sport Sessions for Years 8-11) and sleeping patterns.

If teachers are ill/ unable to conduct a remote lesson, advice will be provided through the Edmodo/Google classroom link.

All students are expected to continue their learning remotely. The Head Teacher Administration will monitor attendance and follow regular monitoring procedures (with the support of SASS staff) and send emails/ make relevant phone calls if students are not participating/ engaging in their learning regularly.

Please allow for a 48-hour turnaround period in response to an email. Teachers are working very hard to support our students. For the wellbeing of our staff also, they will be on duty online between 8:30am and 3:30pm, Monday to Friday.

To read thousands of teen eBooks students simply download the App "ePlatform" by Wheelers.

Then students choose Cumberland High from a list of schools and use their normal DET username and password - (honestly could not be made any easier for our students)

I have also put together an online guide of where to access free reading and educational film resources.

This guide may be accessed via our library website or by the link below:

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT: Drama update

Term 1 in Drama, Year 7 have been learning about the origins of drama, drama specific vocabulary, different stage and theatre types. In our practical lessons we have played games and activities that aim to build trust through positive team- work, listening skills, focus and concentration.

Recently, with the changes to our learning delivery, Year 7 have been learning about tableau story telling (freeze frames) in Drama via their online learning platform. The theory part of the lesson was conducted using Edmodo and Adobe Connect, but getting to the practical side of the lesson required a bit more creativity.

Usually the students would get into small groups to demonstrate the features of a tableau by recreating a typical scene e.g a wedding or funeral.

Year 7 embraced the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of tableau from the comfort of their homes, and I can confirm no family members, pets or animals were injured in the process.

Our drama students are very adaptive and creative! Ms L McCubbin English Teacher

Year 9 Commerce Field Trip to Carlingford Court

Early in March, and way before social distancing and online schooling, Mr Le and I took our Year 9 Commerce classes to Carlingford Court to undertake investigation into Coles and Woolworths. Their tasks were to compare the prices of a basket of goods between both supermarkets.

Further, the students needed to observe and take photos of store layouts, displays and other factors that may influence consumer decision making. The students have an assessment task report, based on their primary research, to complete and submit by the end of term. Mr K Thomas Commerce Teacher
