CITY TOURS ASCENSORES The history began in 1882 when Liborio Brieba - manager of the Company of Ascensores Mechanics of Valparaíso – brought forward the first project. Since that day, the ascensores were installed in distinct parts of Valparaíso, according to the needs of each zone and in total 30 were built, of which half are currently active. Among the reasons for the low number remaining are destruction by earthquakes, landslides, fire, or even for some low profitability. Today the acensores still run for the same reasons they were built, but they have risen in popularity with tourists as well. Cost: From $100 - $300 up or down Currently functioning: Ascensor El Peral (near Plaza Sotomayor), Ascensor Barón (up Cerro Barón, next to Supermercado Jumbo in Av. Argentina), Ascensor Artillería (near the Aduana, along the road 21 de Mayo), Ascensor Concepción (in Esmeralda, to the side of Registro Civil), Ascensor Polanco (at the end of Calle Simpson, in Av. Argentina), amongst various others.

RESTAURANTS AND POPULAR PLACES: THE NIGHT LIFE

In Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, many places exist that include a wide range of typical Chilean food as well as international food. Empanadas and chorrillanas are two of the plates most emblematic of our cooking. The empanadas are fried or baked dough filled with meat, cheese, seafood or ham among other ingredients. The chorrillana was born in Valparaíso and can be enjoyed by multiple people. It is

served in a large plate with french fries, pieces of beef, sausage, fried onion and egg. Mixing Chilean food and music is also possible. There are traditional places were you can find anything from cueca singers (traditional Chilean dance) to shows of tango, salsa, rock, etc. The nightlife includes a variety of locations and styles and it is common to find pubs or bars where the participants share a drink to the sound of musical shows or even poetry readings. You can also find discotheques, karaoke, cinemas and theaters. LINKS: http://www.marapodia.com/cinearte

VALPARAÍSO/VIÑA DEL MAR COAST – PASEO WHEELWRIGHT

One of the most popular paths runs along the shoreline from Valparaiso and Viña del Mar and can be done on foot or riding a bike. Starting from the Muelle Prat in Valparaiso, where visitors can hop on a typical “lancha” (boat) and walk a section of the Bay Porteña, beyond seeing the grave and monument of Arturo Prat in Plaza Sotomayor. In this area there are also many shops with jewelry and artisan items from the central zone. Closer to Muelle Barón in Av. Argentina, is where Paseo Wheelwright is concentrated, one can appreciate a spectacular view of the sea and shoreline. From there, continue to arrive at Caleta Portales, in Av. España (the point that unites Valparaiso and Viña), where one can acquire fresh sea products. Walking from Caleta Abarca, already in Viña del Mar and close to the Reloj de Flores, beaches and important buildings such as the Castillo Wulff can be found, the traditional restaurant, Cap Ducal, Castillo Ross and the Casino de Viña del Mar, that was refurbished thanks to an important hotel project.

THE PASSION FOR SOCCER Without a doubt, soccer is the most prominent and important sport in our country. In Chile, every city has their traditional team, that in Valparaiso corresponds to the first professional soccer club – the Santiago Wanderers. Founded in 1892, with thanks to their magic, effort and fanaticism of their fans, they remain one of the most important, though not always among the charts or traditional tournament champions. In Viña del Mar, there is the Everton team, founded in 1909, with which the Santiago Wanderers used to play the traditional “Clásico Porteño”. The fans of each team have their own nicknames; “caturros” for the wanderinos and “ruleteros” for evertonianos. The soccer games are played in the stadiums Regional Chiledeportes en Playa Ancha de Valparaiso (S. Wanderers) and Estadio Sausilito de Viña del Mar (Everton), on Saturdays or Sundays depending on the date and tournament.

NOSTALGIC VALPARAISO AND THE TEXTILE ROUTE

One of the primary characteristics of the Port is its nostalgic air, portrayed in the old architecture, traditional places and the grand variety of artisan objects that can be found, from clothing to antiques. Shops, ferias, houses transformed into restaurants and galleries of art comprise the environment of the city, from its paths to real routes that wind through the hills and offer textiles. Plaza O'Higgins in Valparaiso has an ideal location for every Saturday and Sunday in the morning, where old telephones, favorite books and crystal lamps abound among their visitors. Also, the feria on Av. Argentina, on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the morning, is as good excuse to look at vintage items. In Cerro Concepción and Alegre you can find shops with works of true fashion artists, who use wool, leather and different fabrics to create products that are characterized by their originality and demand amongst tourists who want to buy and exclusive garment.
