Industrial Landsape, Lanzhou, China In 1949, as part of a

decentralization effort, Lanzhou was designated for industrialization.

A former Silk Road oasis, it functioned as a caravan stop and garrison.

Now it is northwest China’s principal industrial base with refineries, coal and petrochemical complexes, metal processing and machine-making factories, and textile mills.
