1PM: AZTEC SUN Known for their infectious songwriting, rhythmic
versatility and energetic performances, Aztec Sun has twice landed
a spot on Washington City Paper’s coveted “best of” list. Modeled
in the funk and soul traditions, they’re a go-to band for live
events and house parties in the D.C. area.
3:45PM: ORQUESTA AKOKÁN Listening to Orquesta Akokán, you can’t
help but feel the spirits of Cuba’s musical giants radiating from
the speakers. Their arrangements carry the exquisite beauty, pathos
and playfulness of the renowned dance orchestras of the 1940s and
1950s yet still manage to sound fresh and new, as their debut
recording on Daptone Records attests.
5:30PM: Two-time Grammy award winner and former Snarky Puppy
keyboardist Cory Henry will headline the 2018 Rosslyn Jazz Fest
with his new band The Funk Apostles. The group will bring their
unique blend of blues, soul, R&B, Afrobeat, gospel and jazz to
the festival in advance of their album release later this year. NPR
calls Henry “a master,” and says his “musical charisma is a match
for a nearly 400 pound [Hammond B-3] organ.” One of modern music’s
most inventive minds, he’s truly come into his own as a bandleader
and storyteller.

2:20PM: TRUE LOVES The Rosslyn Jazz Fest marks the East Coast
debut for True Loves, an eight-piece instrumental soul group from
Seattle. John Richards of KEXP calls them one of the city’s best
bands. “It’s the soundtrack to that car chase you’ve always wanted
to be in,” he says.
