    The Native American series is fresh from the artists recent New York studio residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program ISCP). These large-scaledigital prints have been created from the paintings of George Catlin who documented the Indian tribes before the advent of photography, and from contemporary self-portraits of the artist, The African Self-Hybridizations, a black and white series, begun in 2000, refer to the early ethnographic photographic tradition. Orlans Pre-Columbian Self-Hybridizations are currently on view at the Stephan Stux Gallery in New York. Of European origin, Orlan has always questioned the societal and cultural pressures brought on the human form, especially on women and notably in the media. Her

    photographic work began in 1964-65 but her repertoire of modes of expression also features such arts as dance, performance, sculpture and printmaking. In theearly 1990s she made the operating room her stage and studio with a series of plastic surgery performances, altering her own features to match elements ofportraits famous in western art history. The resulting combinations were a clear rejection of the usual cosmetic nip-and-tuck. With her many faces, Orlan cuts acrosstime and space, real and unreal.
