Ward and Judy LeHardy

Join Ward and Judy LeHardy as they talk about their epic five-year journey circumnavigating the globe. They will take us from West Point, NY down the East Coast, through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific Ocean, to

Australia, through Indonesia and the Indian Ocean, up the Red Sea, through the Mediterranean Sea, and across the Atlantic Ocean to return home.

They will describe many of the people they met along the way, the challenges they had, the storms they endured and the joys of successfully completing a life-long dream.

Altissimo Flute ChoirAltissimo is a flute ensemble comprised of six local flutists who perform throughout the Richmond area. The group was founded in 2012. Some of the members are professional musicians, while others enjoy playing as a hobby. The flute “family” of instruments ranges from the tiny piccolo to the very large contra-bass flute, with several in between. This concert will feature many different styles of music, including classical, folk, popular, and jazz.

Giacomo Puccini’s Turandotpresented by Glenn Winters with Virginia Opera

Based on an ancient fable set in China, this story of the legendary Princess Turandot, so desirable that men risked their heads for her hand in marriage, weaves the quest for love with the ultimate consequences. Join Dr. Glenn Winters of Virginia Opera for an insightful discussion that will enable even veteran opera-goers to see this classic story with new insight.

Weaving Across Americapresented by Dave Roberts, adventurer

At seventy, Dave Roberts began “weaving across America” hiking, biking, and paddling. Dave has logged 17,000 miles since then and will share tales of his adventures with us.

Watercolor Workshop and Open Studiowith Instructor Christie Jones9:30-11:30 AM in the Pottery Studio

Christie Jones has been a part of the Covenant Woods family for many years and has also been a practicing artist most of her adult life, with experience in watercolor, charcoal and pastel mediums. Her artwork has been featured in galleries on the Outer Banks, at the Jefferson Hotel and currently at RVA Antiques on the Avenue in Richmond. Christie teaches both beginning and advanced students, making this workshop perfect for the first time artist or the seasoned master. Those preferring to work in another medium (Open Studio) are also welcome and will receive the same individualized instruction.

Student fees include art supplies.

Explore the art of letting go with monoprinting without a press! In this hands-on workshop, you will experiment using a variety of papers, a gelli plate and a brayer, acrylic paints, handmade textures (texture plates, stencils) and found objects to create textures. Be prepared to have a great time exploring colors and textures!

Participants must have had at least one class in hand building with clay to sign up for this workshop. Participate in Open Studio and explore your own ideas for creativity in clay. The instructor will be there to assist you in successfully creating ceramic projects of your choice. Please bring descriptions, drawings or pictures of projects you would like to make.

Sea Level Risepresented by Carl Hobbs III, Professor Emeritus with the Virginia Marine Institute

Sea-level rise, a result of global climate change, is an ongoing phenomenon that is having and will have significant consequences for coastal communities. Virginia is especially vulnerable. The talk will consider the long and short term history and future of sea-level rise. The talk also will address the evidence for climate change and some of the reasons for the geologically recent acceleration of the rate of change.

We welcome back David Deal, Executive Director of the Hanover Tavern Foundation, as he weaves together an exciting story about the many people and occurrences that influenced life around the Tavern and Courthouse complex during the Revolutionary War. He will utilize many original photographs, drawings, and quotes as he brings the past to life.

Mardi Graspresented by The Nashville Avenue Stompers

The Nashville Avenue Stompers is an ensemble formed by VCU Jazz Director Antonio García to perform traditional New Orleans jazz and more. With clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, and the occasional piano and vocals, the group has performed at weddings, funerals, social events, and concerts, each in N’Awlins style to “Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler” (Let The Good Times Roll)!

Life in the CIApresented by Bob Sage

Bob Sage spent 35 years as a CIA staff officer and consultant, 25 of which were under cover. He resided 15 years abroad in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Germany and Austria, and has traveled extensively to over 60 countries. The purpose of this talk is to describe the "real" CIA in as much detail as possible, to dispel myths about this Agency and to help the audience gain a better appreciation for the work it does and the sacrifices it demands.

In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, join our talented Executive Chef Jason Smith as he explores Irish culinary classics, such as: corned beef, colcannon (a mixture of creamy mashed potatoes and cabbage), coddle (a delectable blend of Irish sausage, potatoes, and bacon), Irish whiskey cake, and Irish currant tart. This class includes a cooking demonstration, helpful tips, samples of the featured dishes, and recipes to take home.

AARP Driver Safety Course9:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the Commons

Some drivers age 50-plus have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you’ll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. You’ll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.

CLASS FEE: $15 for AARP members /$20 for non-members. Payment will be made directly to the instructor on the first day of class
