Cultural Exchange in Chicago (IL) - USA

What is it?

It is a kind of travel where students from each other cultural, religious, and socio-economic

backgrounds interact with and learn from people who are different from themselves. A cultural exchange

gives to everybody the opportunity to understand a range of perspectives, and respect it. It makes us grow up

as a person. It prepares us to live in a multicultural society.

Step by step

I didn´t have problems with the documents, because I earned it as a prize for being the best student of

my ETEC. The exchange agency that assisted all the students contemplated like me was choose by the

government. They give us all the help to get the passport and the American visa in a fast way. They had

already bought the tickets for us. The only thing that we had to do were follow all their instructions, for

example, attend all the meetings and wait for the departure day.

When the day had finally arrived, everything was ready, my baggages were made according to the

American winter and I was prepared for everything. My family took me to the airport. We had dinner

together and they stayed with me until the time of shipment.

Without my family, and now with my new friends, we waited to enter in the airplane.

It's time to take off. The most interesting thing is when the English began to be heard and suddenly

becomes the only language spoken, especially after the connecting flight we made in Detroit, the

immigration question happened there. I answered everything honestly.

Finally we arrived in Chicago. We took our luggage and waited for the tranfer to get in the homestay.

To meet the host family causes fear in everybody. In my case it was a single woman called Patricia

Vizzone. Who worked in her house as an artist. She is an amazing, funny and friendly person. She always

had dinner with me and asked about my personal life and my day. She showed me how to catch the train to

school. She gave the keys and all the instructions about the house.

In Intrax, school where we studied, we did the placement test and our schedules were decided. I had

met four great teachers in there and many people from different cultures. It is the one of the most amazing

things that can happen in a cultural exchange.

Chicago is a really big city, attractions are everywhere. Every friday, Intrax organized a visit to some

tourist spot of the city. We left the school and they taught the way, gave tips and explained about the place

being visited.

Every day we tried to go somewhere too, mainly because we bought the CityPass, which gave us the

opportunity to meet five of the most famous attractions of the city. This five attractions were chosen

between many CityPass options.

I had the chance to participate in one of the best-known American traditions, the Thanksgiving Day.

Paty took me to her son's house and we ate typical dishes with all the family.

The end of the month came and brought graduation with it. Also it was time to come back to Brazil.

It was wonderful to be received like this

This experience was the biggest one of my life. I enjoyed every single moment in there and if were possible

I would do everything again because an exchange doesn´t only give you touch with a new culture, language

and country, but it gives you a lifetime of opportunities. You have the chance to do and see things you

couldn´t dreamed of. You gain a second family and new friends. It is a journey of self-discovery and

personal growth filled with unforgettable memories. I have gained more experience, confidence and self-

dependence within that month than ever and never regretted anything! It is safe to say that it was a huge

sucess. It is something I will treasure forever. I will never forget my exchange to Chicago.

Intercâmbio Cultural em Chicago, Illinois, EUA

O que é um intercâmbio cultural?

É o tipo de viagem em que alunos de diferentes origens culturais, religiosas e socioeconômicas

interagem e aprendem entre si, dando a todos a oportunidade de compreender uma série de perspectivas e

respeitá-las, as quais nos fazem crescer como pessoa e nos preparam para viver em uma sociedade

multicultural.

Passo a passo do meu intercâmbio

Como eu havia conquistado o prêmio de melhor aluna de minha Etec, não tive muitos problemas em

relação à documentação, porque a agência de intercâmbio, que o governo escolheu para auxiliar todos os

alunos premiados, deu a nós toda a ajuda para tirar o passaporte e o visto de forma rápida. Eles já haviam

comprado as passagens para nós e a única coisa que tivemos de fazer foi seguir todas as instruções deles, por

exemplo, participar das reuniões e esperar pelo dia do embarque.

Quando o dia finalmente havia chegado, tudo estava pronto, minhas malas estavam feitas de acordo

com o inverno americano e eu estava preparada para tudo. Minha família levou-me ao aeroporto, jantamos

juntos. Eles ficaram comigo até a hora do embarque.

Sem minha família e, agora, com meus novos amigos esperamos para entrarmos no avião.

É hora de decolar. O mais interessante é quando o inglês começa a ser ouvido e, de repente, passa a

ser a única língua falada, principalmente depois da conexão que fizemos em Detroit, as perguntas da

imigração ocorreram lá. Respondi tudo com calma e sinceridade.

Finalmente, chegamos em Chicago. Pegamos nossas malas e esperamos pelo carro que nos levaria

até a casa em que ficaríamos.

Meu quarto

Conhecer a família que irá te hospedar causa medo em todos, no meu caso, era uma mãe solteira

chamada Patricia Vizzone, que trabalhava como artista em casa. Ela é uma pessoa maravilhosa, engraçada e

simpática, sempre jantava comigo e perguntava sobre minha vida pessoal e meu dia. Ela mostrou como

pegar o trem para escola, deu-me as chaves e passou todas as instruções sobre a casa.

Na Intrax, escola em que estudamos, fizemos o teste de nivelamento e nossos horários foram

decididos. Conheci quatro ótimos professores e muitas pessoas de culturas diferentes, o que é uma das

melhores coisas que podem acontecer em um intercâmbio cultural.

Chicago é uma cidade realmente muito grande, atrações estão em todos os lugares. Toda sexta-feira,

a Intrax organizava uma visita a algum ponto turístico da cidade, saíamos da escola, e eles ensinavam o

caminho, davam dicas e explicavam sobre o lugar a ser visitado.

Todos os dias nós tentávamos ir a algum lugar também, principalmente, porque nós compramos o

CityPass, que nos dava a oportunidade de conhecer cinco das mais famosas atrações da cidade, escolhidas

entre as opções que o CityPass oferecia.

Tive a chance de participar de uma das mais conhecidas tradições americanas, o Dia de Ação de

Graças. Patty levou-me até a casa de seu filho e comemos pratos típicos da data com a família toda reunida.

Esta foi uma das maiores experiências da minha vida. Eu aproveitei cada momento e se fosse

possível eu faria tudo novamente, porque um intercâmbio não só nos proporciona proximidade com uma

nova cultura, idioma e país mas nos proporciona uma vida de oportunidade. Você tem a chance de fazer e

ver coisas que nunca imaginaria. Você ganha uma segunda família e novos amigos. É uma viagem de

autoconhecimento e crescimento pessoal recheada com momentos inesquecíveis. Ganhei mais experiência,

confiança e independência em um mês do que em toda minha vida e não me arrependo de nada! É seguro

dizer que foi um enorme sucesso e que é algo que eu levarei para sempre. Jamais esquecerei meu

intercâmbio em Chicago.
