With more than 75 years of history, Cultura Inglesa São Paulo has become the largest network of non-franchised

language schools in Brazil. The institution currently has more than 35 branches in the states of São Paulo and

Santa Catarina which provide services to 70,000 students.

Cultura Inglesa has also become an important center for cultural exchange between Brazil and English-speaking

countries and has performed several activities to bridge the gap between these nations. Such activities include an

art event called ‘Cultura Inglesa Festival’ and the ‘Cultura Inglesa Rugby Cup’, as well as theater seasons at several

facilities supported by the organization.

Cultura Inglesa also invests in technology. Its students have access to state-of-the-art language learning tools,

such as digital boards and exclusive e-Campus and Culture World virtual environments, which go beyond

classroom boundaries and allow students to study English in the real world.

CHALLENGE

Reliable data backup and recovery

With 35 branches and over 70,000 students across two important Brazilian states, Cultura Inglesa SP

produces a significant volume of information on a daily basis. The data generated – and changed every

day – is relevant to the daily activities of the branches and must be protected by the IT department.

Data protection at the branches is essential. Many times we were not able to recover data.

IT management in all branches of the institution is carried out from a central point in the capital city of the

respective state. In addition to conventional technical support and system administration tasks, this team is also

responsible for running and managing backup and protecting from these institutions.

Until a few years ago, Cultura Inglesa used BackupNT, a feature of the Windows operating system, to perform

backup routines at its branches. In addition to being an ineffective tool, it failed to enable remote management

of those tasks. Furthermore, the data was stored in tapes that needed to be replaced on a daily basis.

Since there were no IT professionals at the branches of Cultura Inglesa to handle backup schedules, this

task was performed by employees from other departments. As a result, employees often forgot to change

the tape and backup was not performed.

To make matters worse, there was no backup control. Backup scheduling was performed by in-house developed

scripts, which did not always work. If there was a problem, the IT team only found out about it when, for some

reason, information needed to be recovered. “Many times we were not able to recover data. If we were able to

perform recovery, the data was no longer there,” recalls Renato Diniz, technical support supervisor at Cultura Inglesa SP.

In 2006, the company decided it was time to adopt a more robust and relevant backup and recovery solution, and

began its search for tools that would eliminate manual tasks, which were so time-consuming for its professionals.

“Data protection at the branches is essential for Cultura Inglesa’s business,” says Diniz.

After analyzing two solutions, Cultura Inglesa SP decided to download the arcserve Backup trial version.

“The tool worked perfectly and exceeded our expectations, at an affordable cost,” says Diniz, adding that it is

more user-friendly and less complex than its competitor.

Full Service, an integration partner, had already been providing maintenance services to Cultura Inglesa SP

and helped the institution to adopt the best solution for its needs, as well as to implement it. arcserve Backup

currently runs at the company’s headquarters and in 18 branches.

Diniz explains the solution was implemented really quickly and simply – it took less than a month. According to

Diniz, implementation changed routines, but failed to have a negative impact on the environment from a technical

point of view. It started at the headquarters and continued at the branches. “It took us about a week to implement

arcserve Backup at the headquarters because we included the tool training hours. After this, we performed

one implementation a day,” added Diniz.

Eighteen branches of Cultura Inglesa SP now use arcserve Backup. Each one has its own exclusive backup

storage. “We decided to adopt external storage for each branch,” explains Diniz. Backups use 200GB at each

branch and they are automatically performed six days a week – Monday through Saturday. At the headquarters,

this volume goes up to over 1 Terabyte.

arcserve Backup is responsible for storing 4.6 TB/day from the entire institution. According to Diniz, the

backups controlled by arcserve handle data related to users from the branch departments of Cultura Inglesa SP.

Data from critical information systems, such as ERP, CRM and Portal are stored in outsourced data centers.

With arcserve Backup, administrators are able to monitor the backup status of each branch. The solution

sents daily emails to these administrators, including log information and reports whether each backup was

successfully performed. “This allows us to know when a storage task fails,” says Diniz.

information stored and data can be recovered in five minutes,” assures Diniz. “The reports also guarantee that

all routines were successfully performed,” he concludes.

Diniz claims that Cultura Inglesa is so pleased with arcserve Backup that other solutions are off the table.

“Since we implemented this solution, we simply renew our licenses when they expire.”
