Welcome to our first issue of Cultcha. Mornington Peninsula Shire is dedicated to supporting and promoting a vibrant arts and cultural sector. Since publishing an Arts and Culture Strategy — A Creative Peninsula in 2012 our local streets, laneways, galleries and public spaces have flourished with live music events, murals, youth theatre projects, film festivals and public sculptures, all flying the flag for the arts on the Peninsula. Through our Community Grants programs we have been able to introduce many programs into the community and local schools, giving children and youth a chance to try their hand at acting, singing, filmmaking, playing an instrument, making radio programs and performing. We are committed to fostering creativity, sense of place and vitality for everyone. This first issue of Cultcha highlights just a few of the people and places transforming and transformed by arts on the Peninsula. Welcome to our first Arts on the Peninsula newsletter. 2016 is going to be a great year for Arts and Culture on the Mornington Peninsula. The newsletter highlights the many initiatives and activities that contribute to A Creative Peninsula and outlines the success to date of the Shire’s Arts and Culture Strategy

‘Rye has been spoilt, the flags and street art looks fantastic’

The art flags celebrate the Mornington Peninsula and feature works by six artists who call the Mornington Peninsula home and their muse: Justine McNamara, Miodrag Jankovic, Sharron Okines, Michael Leeworthy, Jennifer Ellen and Sabra Lazarus.

WelcomeKiDS AT MPRGYoung at Art at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery introduces 0–5 year olds to the wonderful world of art. With an experienced educator, children have fun as they look, think and wonder at the artworks on display then enjoy a hands-on creative activity inspired by the current exhibition. 15 March, 12 April and 17 May. 10am–11am, Cost $5/child, carer free. School holiday program for ages 5+, 28 March – 8 April, $12. Fabricate fantastic fish, craft kooky constructions and sharpen your design skills! All ages can enjoy a free fishy drop-in art-making activity when they visit MPRG’s latest exhibition Saltwater Country, 26 March – 10 April.

MURALSA C R O S S T H E P E N I N S U L A

Discover our new murals across the Peninsula. Forty students from Mount Eliza Secondary College created murals, mentored by artist Michael Leeworthy, at Mount Eliza Neighbourhood House and in a laneway near the Mount Eliza fish and chip shop. At Wallaroo Primary School, Hastings, students workshopped ideas and came up with a design that The Snake Hole gallery’s Josh Brown, graphic designer and artist, rendered on the Wallaroo shops. Artist Michael Husser painted a large-scale wall in Napier Street and the White Cliffs foreshore building at Rye. As part of the Rosebud Streetscape Program, the Norm Clark walk has been transformed with a 54-foot mural by Michael Leeworthy.

Police Point Shire Park is a nationally significant cultural heritage site for Aboriginal and European values on 17.5 hectares of parklands, located on the Southern Mornington Peninsula at Portsea. The Mornington Peninsula Shire developed the Gatekeepers Cottage for an artist in residence program. In its pilot year 2015–16, a number of local and one international artist have undertaken residences that focus on the development of their practice and actively and creatively engage the community.

Australia’s felt-tip superhero TextaQueen is currently undertaking a residency at the Cottage. TextaQueen explores the politics of sexuality, gender, race, identity, self-image and inter-personal relationships. On Sunday 17 April meet TextaQueen and find out more about her residency and work at Police Point.10am–12 noon, $12

Placemaking Pay it forward in Mornington NorthThe highly successful ‘Pay it Forward’ street festival held at Mornington Park Primary School in 2015 will be returning on Saturday 30 April. Last year artists Judi Singleton and emerging artist Shan Primrose worked with neighbourhood children to create a painted banner that was gifted for display in the school. The theme of the painting was a ‘street map’ and the reduction in the local speed limit to 40 kms. Children added in their houses, dogs, cars, bikes, train line and school.

You’ve been described as a live music activist singer/songwriter, please tell us a little about your background as a musician and where people can enjoy your music?

I was born of a jazz double bass playing father and actress mother. My Fiji Island childhood was peppered with sensational dreamy musical party nights, where my younger brother, sister and I would fall asleep in the hallway of our home, listening to our parents and their international travelling minstrel friends, jamming around the piano, singing up the spirits of the night. It wasn’t until I was asked to start running a muso night in Balnarring, over a decade ago, that I reconnected with this spirit of community music, it’s selfless power and simple sense of joie de vivre! We have held many significant community gatherings, where the environment, sustainability, youth and family have been brought together with music.

There are many venues around the Peninsula who have taken a chance and put on live original music as part of their weekly program. This investment has been crucial in the establishment of what we now know as our ‘Peninsula Music Scene’ and it’s a world class one at that. I currently play regularly at GPO Hotel, Hickinbotham of Dromana, Point Leo Boat

You have been one of the key champions for music on the Peninsula and this led you to help establish the Mornington Peninsula Music Network. What are the aims of the Music Network and how can people get involved?

About five years ago, a group of us got together to discuss and gather what we thought was the essence of the Peninsula’s musical heart. The Mornington Peninsula Music Network was born, a portal/meeting place for all things musical on the Mornington Peninsula, ‘all music, for all people of all ages’. We are constantly looking for opportunities to nurture and showcase the breadth of talent that lies within our elongated boarders. So to help build on what we have, I would like to encourage ALL performers, venue owners, booking agents, instrument teachers, marketing gurus and passionate music peeps to go to our website and to let us know who you are and join in the conversation…

The streets, bars, restaurants and parks will come alive with a rich range of music from both visiting international and national musicians along with our very own musicians over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend 10–13 June.

Local History...‘Visiting one of our local museums is always fascinating – just viewing an old object, photo or listening to a recording can fill you with a sense of curiosity and wonderment – it can take you back to a time that no longer exists – to people and places that have long gone. Our local history can be a marvellous mystery just waiting to be discovered.’

Did you know there are over 22 historical groups and organisations on the Mornington Peninsula that are enthusiastically engaged in preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage? There are eight historical societies across the Shire that are deeply involved with their local communities and are passionate about keeping their local history alive and relevant to their community, school students and visitors. Each year a diversity of arts, music, dance and theatre projects are initiated by communities for residents and visitors through the Creative Community Grants Program. Each Creative Community Grants Applicant must outline a proposed public outcome as part of their submission for funds.

This program provides our communities with opportunities to engage with others, develop new skills and abilities, improve public spaces and places, foster new partnerships and enrich the everyday experience for residents and visitors.
