Message from the Dean

Established in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School is one of the pioneering business schools in Hong Kong and Asia. We are not only the first business school established in Hong Kong, but also the first institution to offer BBA program in the region. For more than half a century of continuous commitment to business education, the School has been offering a wide range of world-class undergraduate programs to equip our students with extensive business knowledge and to ensure them a colorful campus life.

We are devoted to the internationalization of our curriculum and expanding students’ global network. We have established a range of collaborations with top universities worldwide for our undergraduate programs, such as the Global Business Studies, International Business and Chinese Enterprise and the Asian Business Studies. In partnership with Copenhagen Business School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of South Carolina and Waseda University, students will receive lectures from both CUHK and the partnership institutions overseas and will have the chance to learn from their foreign fellows.

To further students’ learning experience outside the lecture rooms, we are active in encouraging our students to join overseas exchange programs offered by CUHK. We have 33 exclusive partner institutions offering the best overseas study opportunities to business school students, and we have recently established an agreement with the University of Michigan to extend our exchange collaboration for undergraduate students from this academic year. I am pleased to say that, every year, one out of two Business School undergraduates studies and lives abroad.

We also open the door to real-world business with mentorship programs and internship opportunities through our strong network with alumni, leading local businesses and multinational corporations. Every year, the School runs the Undergraduate Mentorship Program to allow students to learn from alumni and other business leaders. The Global Internship Program offered by the University also provides students with overseas working opportunities. Over 90 percent of our students have had internship experiences before they graduate. This combination of strong academic training and practical job experience has made our graduates the most preferred job candidates by local employers, according to a recent survey on local university ranking.

Apart from business education, CUHK’s general education courses broaden students' perspectives and provide them with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to face the challenges of contemporary society. Values such as cultural sensitivity and social responsibility are essential to an educated world citizen, which echoes the motto and spirit of the University. In addition, CUHK provides a unique college experience to its undergraduate students. College programs and activities complement the formal curricula by delivering whole-person education and a nourishing environment. The college system also encourages intimate interaction among teachers, students and alumni as well as enhances their communication and interpersonal skills, which are vital in today’s business world.

We sincerely welcome you to the family of CUHK Business School, to learn and to grow with our faculty staff and students in the next 4 years.

Case CompetitionsCase competitions are traditionally one of the significant highlights in the university life of a business student. Each year our students actively participate in local and/or international case competitions, which require them to formulate a strategy to a given real-life business situation and present their ideas before a panel of judges comprising top business professionals.

At the case competitions, you manage to use everything in your arsenal from professional business knowledge to general analytical and presentation skills. Participating in these competitions would provide you the opportunity to interact with and learn from business professionals and to expand your networks beyond the campus.

To prepare you for case competitions, we organize an annual event - Academic Cup to help train your ability to apply theories in real business cases. Students with outstanding performance may have a chance to represent CUHK in local or international case competitions.

Along with in-depth business knowledge, we also equip you with a repertoire of professional skills like leadership, analytical thinking, problem solving as well as presentation and communication skills. All these skills are essential for personal development and workplace success.

Company visits Company visits provide direct insights into how real businesses operate and opportunities to receive direct, practical advice from real-world management teams. Visits of this nature are core elements of, for example, programs such as the IBCE, which organizes orientation trips to leading enterprises in China. The Undergraduate Office also organizes visits to multinational corporations such as Bloomberg, the Airport Authority and the Cathay Pacific City.

“Having taken a semester of internship at Google and another internship at Baring Asset Management, I had the opportunity to expose myself to different industry sectors. I was in charge of a project to help the client run a marketing campaign. I helped my teammates conduct industry analysis. By trying new things every day, I learned a lot more about myself. It also helped me a great deal in identifying my strengths and weaknesses. These internships serve as a great platform for me to explore my potential from different perspectives before graduation.”

Angela Zhang, Integrated BBA

“I recalled a challenge I faced during my internship in the equity research department of an investment bank. I was building a model to forecast the motor gasoline and on-road diesel demand in India for the coming 5 years. Due to the limited official information available, the model lacked some critical historical data. I overcame the challenge by discussing it with our India specialist about the motor market in India, and defined a few assumptions and parameters to forecast the consumption pattern. I believe the best way to overcome challenges at internship is to reach out for help and ask the right person.”

“The curriculum of CUHK is excellent from which I have acquired knowledge in various aspects through attending a variety of classes, career workshops, company visit, alumni sharing, etc. With the guidance of my academic advisor and career advisor, I am able to effectively plan for my studies and gained an internship opportunity at the Corporate Banking Department of Bank of China in Jakarta. Outside the classroom, I am thrilled at the diversity of extra-curricular activities available here. I really enjoyed being a member of the CUHK Rugby Team as well as playing in various soccer tournaments!”

“The CUHK campus is huge and there's a lot to do here - it never gets boring. CUHK Business School has good academic reputation and it is one of the reasons I chose to study here. Studying in Hong Kong gives me advantages, as the city is a financial and economic hub with numerous opportunities. I think it is one of the coolest cities to live in as the city is very versatile, offering not only vibrant city life but also wonderful natural scenery. In the next few years, I plan to pick up Chinese and start up my own business!”

Corporate Social Responsibility and EntrepreneurshipClass attendance and participation in student activities are, of course, important aspects of university life. However, at CUHK Business School, we attach equal importance to serving the community. Accordingly, our School encourages students to apply their professional knowledge and to repay the community. Our students are enthusiastic in participating in social services, such as the Citi-HKCSS Community Program.

In addition, we also encourage our students to make their corporate social responsibility (CSR) business ideas a reality by giving them full support. With advice from our faculty members, some of our students have successfully launched their own social care projects.

CSR Exchange Scholarship Program We also offer the CSR Exchange Scholarship Program to encourage CUHK students to participate in CSR related activities during their exchange studies in order to gain in-depth CSR knowledge and learn the latest CSR issues and techniques at their exchange destinations.

“Currently based in London, I am a social entrepreneur, and also a consultant to other social entrepreneurs, businesses and philanthropists on maximizing social change.

People often say what you study is not related to what you do – but I don’t agree. I think our education is an important tool for us to analyze the complex world around us, and to know what’s already been done and what not. Even though my major was business, I also took classes in politics, history, geography – which inspired me to apply my business knowledge to societal problems – and that is, social entrepreneurship.”

“Becoming a pastry chef has always been my dream. In the mentorship program, I am very lucky to be matched with my mentor Steve, who is a seasoned hospitality specialist with over 20 years experiences in hospitality and hotel management. Steve shared with me how it’s like working in a hotel and a bakery kitchen and referred me to work as a part-time pastry chef assistant at a hotel. He also invited me to join his visit to the Bakery Expo. These experiences have greatly honed my culinary skills and broadened my knowledge in dessert making as well as the understanding of how the industry operates!”

Shelly Wu,Global Economics and Finance

“The mentorship program means a lot to me not only because I met my mentor Andrew, but I also made friends with Danny and Michael, two other mentees of Andrew’s. As an international student from Korea, I was able to gain insight of the local job market and understand Hong Kong and local culture from them. We have gatherings regularly and exchange views on many various topics, from career, personal interests, to art and culture. I once shared my mobile app business competition idea with them and they shared their opinions and gave me critical feedback which I valued very much.”
